The King is back!
I'm a huge football fanโฆ but in my regard that is of the NFL football variety or American football. I enjoy soccer games every so often but I don't consider them the type of sports title I need to pick up annually because the rosters just don't make a difference to me. With reviewing a soccer title I'm looking more at how the game plays and what kind of features are offered. Now, Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 (or PES 2016) is the first of the two soccer games (FIFA 2016 is the other) released in the states this year. It's also the first of the two soccer games I will be covering. A little bit more background on myself pertaining to soccer games. I have played FIFA exclusively up until this review. I have heard mixed feelings on the PES franchise as a whole so I was intrigued to start this review. After heading down to the pitch and playing a handful of matches (see I know some soccer terms) you can tell that PES 2016 is a very true simulation of the game of soccer. The controls took me some time to grasp, but once I did, I felt I had remarkable control over my squad. I also feel like I should mention that the A.I. plays extremely well, and when I say that, I mean they play well not only as your opponent but also as your teammates. This is a problem I have periodically in other sports titles (spoilers for my FIFA 2016 review). Jumping around between league matches and other modes, I stumbled into myClub mode. Which seemed at first to be a direct answer to the Ultimate Team modes that EA Sports features in all of their titles. Upon digging a bit deeper into the mode I began to realize, that while myClub mode was definitely similar or even inspired by Ultimate Team mode, it offers a rather different experience. Rather than dealing with packs of cards that gives you the players and coaches like Ultimate Team, myClub has players acquired through other means. You can pick up free agents and hire agents. Some agents vary in cost, (there is an in game currency that you earn by completing feats throughout the game, but also available through those damn micro transactions) the more high profile agents that will pull in better players obviously cost more. Another feature of myClub mode that stood out to me, are your team's trainers. Say you have some players that just don't make the field, they aren't up to snuff to take a roster spot. You have the option to convert these players into trainers. Converting players to trainers will benefit the rest of the team by improving other players ratings. There is strategy when converting as well. Converting a better rated player into a trainer will yield better results than a player with a very low rating. So it's a bit of a gamble, would you rather have your high profile players become trainers to help the other players quickly, or will you make some of the team's bench riders become trainers? The choice is yours. Ultimately, I had a lot of fun with myClub and I hope EA takes some of these features under consideration when they make future improvements to their Ultimate Team mode. I couldn't help but think of how I would utilize these features in Madden. No longer would I get stuck with Mark Sanchez as my backup quarterback. He would instantly become a trainer, but I digress. myClub is also playable online, so you can take your team online and see how you match up with the rest of the world. My squad, "For British Eyes Only," are currently looking for some challengers. Now I do have some red cards for the game (more subtle soccer terms). The commentary didn't do much for me. I am generally a very strict critic when it comes to commentary in sports titles and I was not impressed. In fairness, I have been very critical of commentary in sports games across the board for years. The NFL 2K series, which is no longer made, had some of the best commentary in my opinion. Their last installment was NFL 2K5, over ten years ago, and I still feel like no one has totally done justice in the commentary department. PES 2016's commentary is serviceable but it didn't immerse me in the game. Another area that I have heard some complaints about are the team names. Konami didn't get the licenses to use actual team names for a good amount of teams. While this isn't really a problem for me, like I said I'm not a big soccer fan, it does hurt the authenticity of the game. It especially hurts because PES 2016 is just so good at gameplay that it would have really been a complete package with all the proper licenses. Having said that, you can edit the team names and even import images into the PS4 version, but that just seems like a lot of work to have to do after picking up a game at full price. I'm glad I had a chance to check out PES 2016 as it would have flown completely under my radar during this busy video game time of the year. I can say I will no longer be an exclusive FIFA player and already have recommended some friends to check out Pro Evolution Soccer. Konami may have called it a quits with some of their other franchises (a single tear for Silent Hills) but they have definitely focused on crafting a great soccer experience that is both deep and rewarding.

... the last time when I was in a true love with a soccer game
I still remember the last time when I was in a true love with a soccer game; I mean becoming addicted to it and playing for hours per day. This was long time ago with Winning Eleven 4. I switched to Fifa in 2011 with most folks who hated how frustrating PES is becoming. Even though Fifa was and still a good game, but it is not addictive, you won't spend many hours playing Fifa and feel the (one more game) annoying and joyful desire knocking your head. I'm not a fanboy, so being loyal to a certain brand is not in my list. In 2014, I played both demos, I saw how PES is promising but still not in Fifa level, so I picked Fifa 15. I pre-ordered Fifa 16 cause I was sure that PES won't beat it "as usual". However, I tried the both demos, and from the first game of PES 16 I got that feeling back "being addicted to a soccer game". I spent the next 7 days playing both demos, guessing I'm still overestimating the experience, but every time I finished a game in PES, and went to Fifa 16, I felt bored. I played a lot of games and had a lot of fun. So the day before PES released, I cancelled the Fifa 16 pre-order and replace it with PES. I do care about licences so when I got to know about the importing feature, I was more sure that I made the right decision. I also waited about 7 days to look at the reviews and they were all proving my feeling. Yes, the roster update was delayed. I was angry for 4 days, but in those 4 days I spent HOURS in the game. Think about it, you wait for the roster update for a month, and then play the game for a whole year, or getting them with Fifa but complaining about the stupid gameplay for a year. Again, I'm not a fanboy and don't want to be that guy, so my advice is playing both demos. IF YOU FEEL THAT ONE OF THEM GETS YOUR HEART, THIS IS YOUR GAME. DONT COMPARE BETWEEN THEM REGARDING GRAPHICS, MOTION, SHOOT, PASS, ETC, JUST FEEL IT. For me, PES stole my heart from the first game. Pros: - The legend is back (game play is awesome) -Every game is different and gives you a fresh experience. -Players are responsive and intelligent - Players have different styles and they all effective depending on what they have (For ex: Slow but great finisher, physically powered and fighting player, fast and annoying, organizer in the middle with great vision, a great passer with lack of strength and height...etc. every player is different) - Players with weak abilities will struggle in front of skilled players (exactly as real soccer) Fifa's players are similar to each other -Physical collision is brilliant -Scoring a goal gives pleasure -AI is perfect -When you lose you don't hit anything (you feel you made a mistake and deserve receiving a goal) -Fairness (NO STUPID ACTS FROM THE PLAYERS) - Passing and building up the attack is the key (as real soccer) - Entertaining , addictive, and fun - Importing images resolved the Licence issue - Master League is back - Editing is creative. You build your game gradually. Cons: - Roster update delay - Few Fouls - Annoying Ref - Lack of stadiums (but will forget it when you enjoy the gameplay) - You will get to bed late due to (one more game voice in your head, which I haven't heard it while playing Fifa before)

PES is the one true King of Soccer.
First of all, people who don't like PES are just haters, because year in and year out haters can't just handle fact that PES changes its game drastically compared to FIFA. I pre-order Pes every year and just because you didn't get a digital code doesn't give you the audacity to rate the game one star. The other guy who said it takes 1 sec to pass and shoot obviously didn't play PES 2016, my definition of haters. He is used to playing Fifa that lacks dynamism and creativity so he can't think of how create chances to score a goal. All he knows is to press the X and square button. Listen to me, if you haven't bought this game, buy it, otherwise you are missing out if you're a fan of the sport. It took many years, but this year I can confidently say PES is way better than FIFA. From the graphics to Ai and even new commentators bring the game to life. You also have the option to upload kits into the game as well I have done it. It emulates the gameplay of real soccer players, their emotions, frustrations and celebration. I played the demo for Fifa and players just shoot the ball so hard when the could just tap it into the far post. Fifa is a load of crap, it's for people who don't like progress and obviously cannot break boundaries to try something different. Don't even read any of those one star comments, those who play PES know how improved and awesome PES is that's why we're here giving it 5 stars because we won't lie to you. Konami doesn't pay me to rate their game a 5 star, I buy quality not quantity. I only give honest reviews if the game is crap I'll admit it's crap like PES 2014. This is the year FIFA will recognize PES has a lot to bring to the table and also the year PES made fifa look like crap. Just buy the game and enjoy some soccer or you can stick to your Fifa but don't trash my Pes, hater.

PES 2016 is a masterpiece, best football game ever.
I played PES my whole life, since 1995 and a year ago I gave PES 2015 a chance and I wasn't disappointed, there were a few things that bothered me like too many dumb fouls that made the game slower. Anyway, that all changed in PES 2016, you feel that you are in control of the player all the time, until the last instant of the play, so you can always change your mind quickly and chose another alternative while dribbling or defending and the player will respond like you want. It feels real, it looks real. There are some team names and logos that aren't displaying correctly (e.g. English Premier League), but just google for the images, put 'em in a pen drive, import and edit the uniforms and logos of the teams. It will take a few minutes but the results are great! Just in case you are considering buying FIFA because of all the cute graphics and complete licenses of teams you will never choose. DON'T DO IT! I have never bought FIFA, but I've played it and I always hated it. I can't tell you what is like now (2016), but don't buy it just because of the cute package. My friends used to play FIFA, now they are hooked on PES.

Sublime! experience.
absolute masterclass! feels like the old days. the dribbling is smoothe. shooting is electric and the difficulty of the AI on superstar difficulty can make you go bald...just the way I like it! This game makes an improvement in graphics and refereeing decisions, AI are more prone to make foolish challenges compared to previous games where they are always 100% accurate in tackling. however, at first release the goalkeeping AI was shoddy at best. you could score from almost anywhere as long as you kept the shot low. it didn't matter if you played against buffon, neuer or courtois. shoot low and its a guaranteed goal. I think this has been corrected in an update because it doesn't seem to work anymore. anyway i won't attempt to fifa or EA bash but i got tired of paying for the same game with different player ratings each year and for the past two years i have stuck with pes who've shown real dedicated improvement. I wish they got more licenses tho.

PES2016 translates what football is with much more fidelity
I've been buying FIFA for many years and football games since I was a teenager, and I'm 41 now ;-). In fact, I still have some of the PS2 and PS3 copies of those games. But at the end of 2014, I gave PES2015 a chance and I actually bought both games, FIFA15 and PES2015. I was playing back and forth PES and FIFA until I realized that I was enjoying PES much better (even though I was losing at times) This was when I witness myself of the change PES has been made on Football games and on me, giving a bigger emphazise on passing and strategy instead of pace. This year I bought PES2016 and I will not buy FIFA16. I played the FIFA16 Demo and did not like it. Something drastically will have to happen later this year, like a huge patch released by EA or something to change my mind. And it's not that FIFA16 is a bad game, it's that it remains the same and that's what bothers me: pace based football game with little or no care about passing, formations or gameplay. Here are a few of the reasons why I like PES2016: -Extremely fluid gameplay. -Less arcade football game. -Much better passing and build up game. -Better AI (players move forward after passing the ball or create spaces depending of the situation) -Dynamic weather -Collision dynamics. True, PES still does not have all the licenses but who cares... on the pitch, where it really matters, at least for me, it's fantastic. You really enjoy picking formations or building up your play based on the players you have. You don't depend of pace only for that. There are a few things I don't like though, the game is not perfect, of course: -Commentary team better than PES2015 but still bad. -Improved menus but lack of visual appealing. I think that PES2016 translates what football is with much more fidelity. Football is a game of strategy, looking for open spaces, do nice passes, you can accomplish that on PES2015 beautifly. PS: You can still get official kits via imports, which is now new on PES2016. This explains how: http://youtu.be/fGq-0vJ71UA
