Great card, can also control treble and bass settings
Despite costing about a fraction of brand name cards (SB Audigy, X-FI.. etc..) this card sounds and works great with Windows 7 64-bit. I bought this because my on-board sound stopped working.Pros:- You can control the bass and treble settings! Not only that, but you can also control and adjust the EQ settings exactly to your liking. Or choose one of the preset options (Dance, Bass, Treble, Live, Rock, Soft-rock, Jazz, Metal, Rap, Classic and Vocal). I bought the Sound Blaster Audigy SE, but you can not control the treble, bass or EQ. Back it went to the store.- Includes a full sized bracket so you can interchange them! Since I don't have a slim desktop, I changed it to the full sized bracket. Took about 30 seconds by unscrewing 2 screws.- Sounds great, I can't tell the difference from my HD built-in Audio. I am able to play Battlefield 3 and hear all the sounds and action just like my high quality built-in sound.- Mic input works great!- Since my video card takes up almost 3 slots, the PCI card would cover up the fan on my video card. No problems with this card blocking it because its a slim form factor PCI card.- You simply can't beat the price!- Stable. I have used this card for gaming (Battlefield 3, Starcraft 2... etc..) and listening to music. It has not caused any system instabilities or issues.Cons:- New drivers from StarTect website works, but when you try to use the Audio software, your whole PC locks up, just like some reviewers on Amazon.com has been reporting. Do not use the downloaded drivers from the website, use the ones on the CD that came with it!Notes:DO NOT USE drivers downloaded from the startech website. Use the drivers that came with the CD. The drivers are located in SOUND > CMedia8738. If you use the ones on the startech website, you will not be able to control the treble and bass via the Audio config software.Theirs another StarTech card on amazon with the same specs. The other card thats being sold is only for full sized brackets for mid-towers and towers. This one is only for slim desktops, but it does include a full sized bracket! In my opinion, this one is better value because you get a free full sized bracket included!I can't recommend this card enough. For anyone like me who needs to be able to control the EQ settings (Treble and Bass), this is the card to get. Without being able to control the EQ settings, my speakers sound "hollow" and very flat. By adjusting the EQ settings, my speakers came back to life again just like it did using my on-board sound card.

Ear splitting crackle
I have a Dell desktop computer that's a few years old. I installed Windows 7 32 bit onto it when I got it. The sound card wasn't working and I couldn't get it to work, so i just decided to buy a new one. I wanted something cheap, this isn't my main computer, I regularly use a macbook pro, but I just wanted average sound. I didn't need all the fancy bells and whistles, just something that i could plug speakers into and hear sound. Well I finally get it today, attached the standard length slot and plugged it into my pci slot. I plugged my headphones into it, tried to play a video, and immediately ripped my headphones off. The hissing/crackling almost made me deaf. I guess I had it a bit loud, but still. In the sellers defense though, I just installed a random driver off the disc they provided, so I'm gonna update my review later after I mess around with other settings and drivers and see if i can get it to work properly. I don't have high hopes though.

Works as advertised
Installed this card into an old Dell XP machine. Windows found it, asked for the driver location, I inserted the CD that came with the card and Windows installed the driver. Rebooted and all was well. The installation was easy and the sound quality is reasonable for an inexpensive card. I was a little concerned at first though when I unpacked it and saw the box. The picture of the card and the description on the box were for a PCI Express card, but it was a PCI card as advertised. The card was enclosed in an anti-static bag and looked new as far as I could tell.

Software was better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick - but not much...
Cheap solution for a bad onboard sound card. :O) However, This was not plug & play on my Windows XP SP3 system. IMPORTANT/Caution: Follow the instructions in the booklet exactly and install the software from the "run" command line. I installed it from the SOUND\CMedia8738\setup.exe file by clicking on the icon and it scrambled my video card. I was able to recover on this fresh system through system restore. Card worked fine once installed. Windows Update did remove the nice equalizer program when it installed an updated driver shortly afterwards...

Blah.
I got this to replace an on-board sound card that had stopped working. This card was cheap and easy to install, and sounded just fine. I was quite content with it until it went bad, which happened within a month. Such are the hazards of buying stuff on the cheap.

PCI Sound Card WORKS!
I chose THIS card on account of price. I cannot yet find a driver disc I have for onboard HD sound system on one of our 5 PC's. This one is a very fast XP Pro I use for editing video. Easy to install with minor wrangling with changing from short form mount to full size PCI install. I am surprised no auto-run on installation disc but it is clearly stated how to enter <RUN> in START menu to get drivers installed. You MUST disable any other sound devices in Device Manager or you WILL get conflicts. I also read this does not work in Vista or 7. This PC is not used for general viewing. The sound card just works fine with my $5 speakers til I find the original driver for onboard sound device. I haven't hooked in better speakers, but sure it will be fine If you don't have or need 5.1 or 7.1 sound this will work for you, with 2 or 4 speaker sound. Don't buy more than you need.

So weit so gut.

A great product
This product has worked extremely well for me. It was installed in a computer formerly running XP and worked 'straight out of the box' with Windows 7. I couldn't get updated drivers for the on board original sound chip. Instructions were clear and simple, it came 'on line' and got me connected to my broadband with no fuss or problems. A great product at an excellent price.

Très bien pour remplacer une sortie son /audio Ko de sa carte mère. Et sans que cela ne fasse moche.
