Stop Whining!!!
Yes... you need a power drill, a flat head screw driver, a 1/4 drill bit, and a 1/8 drill bit to assemble it. You may also want a rubber mallet. However, I recommend placing cardboard on a concrete block and tamping the handle on it to drive the axe head down. It's far more effective than the mallet method. Just take your time and you should be fine. Anyway... It's a great axe. I have some experience forging knives and have watched professionals forging axes and swords. A good axe is made in two sections. The first is the body that connects to the shaft of the axe (which is made of a more mild steel). The second is the edge of the axe blade that is made of a harder steel. The hard steel is wedged into the soft and forge welded together, then blended and ground to look like one solid piece. The soft steel allows the body to flex and the hard steel allows the edge to hold and edge. If you look closely at this axe you can see how it was made in sections and forge welded together in this fashion. Now this is just a speculative observation. I know it was created in sections and forge welded. However the hard steel edge and soft steel body may not be present. It may just be all one grade of steel. But knowing cold steel I doubt it. That and forge welding would almost be irrelevant if it is all made of the same grade of steel. It would just be easier to drop forge it in that case. Long story short it appears to be made by someone who knows what they are doing.

Razor Shaving Sharp Piece Of Art. BUY IT
Everybody online asks me after watching my youtube video on this CS Viking Axe, Why did you buy such an expensive paper weight? Why did you need this? Well I don't need it, and it is so much more than expensive paperweight. It is an accurate remake of a real viking axe, the design, the research it took to build this, the history behind this thing is worth owning. It is a great conversation piece also. I was trying justify buying this or not but I have gotten so much satisfaction from it since I have got it. I have it hanging in my living room on my guitar hanger. It turns friends head as soon as they come in. Due to the policy of amazon I cant give you external links but If you search Viking Axe Cut Test on youtube you will see my video, It is under the name "Musicmanstngry" Thank you Amazon for such great prices! Pros:Looks Cool :Its a piece of history :When holding this thing you can tell it means business. :Razor Sharp :Cuts through Two 2 Liter bottles of water (Find my video on Youtube) Cons: Some people think you are crazy for owning one : Not really a con but this is a piece of Carbon, It will rust, I suggest putting some Rem Oil or any type of gun oil on it to keep it from rusting.

Nice project Axe
First, shipping was crazy fast. I purchased this axe on a Saturday and it was on my doorstep Tuesday morning. Everything was well packaged and protected so I have no issues there. My one word to anyone wanting to order this and assemble it ( yes assembly is required but I knew this already) and get there inner Ragnar on, The handle pole is so thickly protected with a thick lacquer that the axe head will not even go a good six inches up the handle upon initial assembly attempt just to see how this thing is going to look. I have already prepared to sand the pole so this is no great issue with me. About the handle, they did send my a wonderfully beautiful piece of hickory that has a beautiful grain pattern and is straight and solid. I am very pleased with it and cannot wait to get it sanded to see the wood without the varnish. This handle is SOLID! You could use this thing for a short defensive staff all on it's own if you so wished. I must find out if cold steel sells extra handles. I have not found them for sale online anywhere. The head is nice and seems to be well polished. The grain pattern of the steel is uniform. My complaints with the head are few. It is dull to the point where I can safely run my finger across the edge without fear of being cut. The angle of the edge is very steep and does not seem an appropriate edge for a weapon designed for cutting flesh . This is a weapon not a wood cutters axe and I will re profile the edge as I can as this is a large edge to deal with and I have to work out the logistics of it. I am not the greatest of free handed sharpeners. The horn designed for stabbing is non existent. Just not there. A rounded place where the sharp point is supposed to be. I will also have to find a way to bring back the sharp horn to this axe. This axe will take some minor work to get it where it should be, but for the price, it is well worth the time. I am in no hurry as Lindisfarne was raided long ago and I can take my time and get this right. It is absolutely worth the price I paid for it and I would order it again at this price. Besides, isn't a little time and effort in making the axe personally your what it is all about? STILL if anyone knows where they are selling extra handles for this PLEASE let me know!!

Cold Steel Homerun
Love Cold Steel and I love this product! It is a sturdy built relatively sharp battle axe. It is an amazing product for the price point it actually cannot be beat! The blade came pretty damn Sharp it actually fit very snuggly very quickly. It is heavy I will say that as a bigger man while the weight is comfortable you can definitely tell it can get away from you on an over swing. I have a lot of Cold Steel but I buy Cold Steel because I view it as toys for adults. Cold Steel was always very durable and a lot of fun. Especially for those of us who don't take ourselves too seriously. Buy the damn thing!

CAVEAT EMPTOR
what was delivered to me (shipped/sold by Amazon) was NOT new Cold Steel. it was either a counterfeit or a bizarrely, horribly abused used one. the haft had had a botched "scorched grain" effect attempted. looked like one of those uber cheap hafted martial arts "weapons" one sees at the swap-meet. the finish was a bubbly, rough cheap high gloss. the shaping was uneven and sloppy. none of this looked/felt like a Cold Steel haft and i own several of their wood handled items. on top of this a random hole had been filled flush with a plastic screw anchor! of the blade... dull, dull, dull. appeared to have been ineptly attacked by someone wielding a very coarse carborundum stone. they only achieved scratches. deep ones. this blade was not brought up to a fine polish, was a uneven brushed finish. couple of large chips/manufacturing flaws around the eye. shaping was not symmetrical. rubber (?) residue or "something" globbed around eye/poll areas. it screamed FAKE! or a seriously abused piece. or both. which i feel is a distinct possibility. i use/collect edged tools/weapons so i have some knowledge. i read through many reviews (too many probably) and it is pretty obvious that a goodly number of reviewers are doing......odd things to blades (and other things too). so be aware. if you do buy one i hope it is a real Cold Steel (darn fine products). and a new one. almost forgot- this came very poorly, possibly dangerously packaged. Cold Steel is excellent in securely boxing their items. the box for this had been crudely folded and barely taped. the inside boxed axe head could slide back and forth with no padding.

Cold Steel Axe Rocks
it came unassembled but only took me about 5 minutes to put together with two drill bits and the included hardware. This is an awesome axe! It is more than sharp enough as is and the blade gives off a nice ring when you tap it. The head can be put on either way so there is room for customization and I am going to woodburn some knotwork into the handle to make it more unique. Overall I am very happy with it and the delivery time was very quick.

Let your Inner Viking out!
just don't get arrested for pillaging a nearby town :) Okay, this is a very good axe. Its not nearly as heavy as I thought it would be. But it is not for chopping wood, well maybe very light wood chopping. This is meant for "Soft" targets, wink wink, nudge nudge, no what I mean, no what I mean :) You might need to sand the handle down a tad to get it to fit right, and there are brass screw rivets to hold the head on. So you will have to fit the head. But its not hard. Over all I will be taking this with me, to a Scottish Festival, just to show it off. Oh, would be nice if Cold Steel made a blade cover for it.

You mau need some basic tools beyond drill and screwdriver.
Well I have ordered 4 items from cold steel now that have wooden shafts (warhammer, boar and assegai spear, norse hatchet) before this and I have to say the shaft on this axe is wonderful! Boar spear is the only one that compares. The shaft on the others were all either plan or of rather...mediocre quality. The steel is amazing like all true Cold Steel products of course, nothing more can be said without repeating all the other reviews. One tiny little problem though. The inside of the axe "eye" where the haft goes had a small protrusion that kept if from sliding in all the way, 2 minutes with a steel file and problem solved but it was something I had to do in order to mount it properly. That said a few tools and you've got a great display piece for your den and also fully functional battle weapon...for all you folks who need that sort of thing.

I love this axe
I love this axe, perfect and beautifull, except the fact we have to put the head with two pieces of metal and need to drill for the piece. I didnt did it and i fixed the head myself with leather, rope and handcraft thing. Excepting this this axe is really nice.

A decent historical reproduction.
They have changed the steel axe head, it now looks coated, and is a dull gray. Older versions were shiny polished bare steel, which I prefer. Other that that I like the design and weight. Nowadays they attach the word viking to sell just about everything. And very little the name is attached to is even close to historical in design. This axe reminds me of a Petersen Type L or Type M. Now, is this axe an exact replica, no it is not but for the money and what is available it is among the best you can get in my opinion.

Very nice
Very nice looking and handling axe. Easy to assemble. Though I'd you're going to put it to any use at all don't use the rivet screws, but instead hammer a wedge into the top because after a couple swings into air it's already loose but that's to be expected. Comes with a good edge. My box didn't contain the instructions so I didn't know what size drill bit I needed, but someone on the US Amazon site has the sizes needed in their review.

Great but...
Alright great axe. Would have been great but when mounting the head to the handle there is a screw they want you to put in to keep the head at the right end. This might be completely optional of course but since it was there, I figured Iโd use it. Problem was, the holes on the axe head itself were misaligned... this made it very difficult to install the screw with any easy. Especially since it was a slot head. I would suggest to cold steel that maybe they start using a hex screw.
