Not Suitable As A gift
What I like about this pen is the stub nib that comes with it which offers an interesting writing experience. Though I was quite disappointed with this pen when it first came. After inserting the cartridge it kept skipping. So I got the cartridge out cleaned the pen put the cartridge back in. This time it wrote a very pale blue because of the water that got trapped in the body. However after resting horizontally on the table overnight it started writing a lot better in the morning though the skipping continued decreasing in frequency. In a week of trying it out everyday it got better and better with less skipping. I have to say it has been a challenging start so far. I have ordered a variety of nibs to experiment with after having it it with the 1.5 stub nib I chose as default which might be too broad for its poor ink flow. However they say the flow gets much better with the converter which does not come with the pen.I would advise you to not gift it to anyone as it is not a pleasant experience when it is constantly skipping at first preventing you from writing even a short word. It is also a completely plastic pen only the cap is aluminium. It feels deceptive to write aluminium in the description as the whole pen is plastic just like the slightly less expensive models with the plastic caps and it feels ridiculous that the cap is much heavier than the pen which causes an imbalance. So I had to purchase a plastic cap as the balance of the pen is non existent when posted with the heavier aluminium cap.If I knew all these as a first fountain pen I would just get a vista with the converter included in the package or get the red and black cheaper model if you need to have a tail. Lamy stub nibs can be purchased separately if you want to try a stub nib. Also I don't think it is fair to call a pen aluminium when nothing except the cap is made of that material. The good thing about this Lamy pens is you can add so many nibs, change caps, even swap body parts and cartridges and converter is so available. I want to like this pen but getting it out of the box seeing cap and body made of different materials feels like it is not a complete product from the start. Would be more useful if they put a converter or an extra cartridge instead of an aluminium cap rather than make it look a certain way in the photos.

For those important letters/writings!
This is my third Lamy, and I'm delighted with it. I have a straightforward Safari fountain pen for everyday use, which is cheap, smooth, quick and flexible (and saves me resorting to ball-points), and a narrow-nib italic pen for short notes that are more important. However, I wanted a real calligraphy pen again, and this really fits the bill for letters (yes, even in this day of e-mails I still like to write proper letters!) and important writings. It's much smoother than the last calligraphy pen I had, and the refills are quick and reasonable. I'm a definite Lamy fan, having been converted by these three great pens, all for a reasonable price. It's 'horses for courses' - I don't think we should expect one pen to suit all situations, but if I only wanted one basic pen then I'd stick with the Safari (but what a pity to miss out on lovely calligraphy writing that certainly gets you noticed).

Excellent pen
I tried this pen in a shop ages ago, and I remembered that it had excellent ink flow. I wanted to practise calligraphy, and after a cheaper set failed on me, I decided to go with this one. The grip is comfortable, the ink flow is perfect, you don't even need to wait after you place in the cartridge, however, I am not too happy with the writing itself. The nib seems to produce one width all along, which may not be a problem for others, but I was a bit disappointed. The cheap set was beautiful in this sense, but troubles with the ink flow just ruins the whole experience. Altogether I would recommended to anyone. (I'm talking about the m a n u s c r i p t set with interchangeable nibs. The look of the writing is amazing, but the quality is terrible. I might as well dip it in a bottle of ink).
