Book is amazing. Binding is grade A trash.
Content- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐+Binding- 💩💩💩💩💩+The content of the book itself is amazing. It's breathtaking. That won't disappoint you in the least. The art is bright and colorful, the pages are nice and glossy and the book feels very substantial. But the book is bound with this really cheap glue and the first page detached itself from the spine immediately as I opened the book. I literally had this book for 5 seconds and it started falling apart. So far it only seems to be the first page: the others towards the middle are fine for now.I'm still going to read the book over and over but I'm afraid that more pages will fall out with continued handling. I'm a huge Transformers fan so I'm not going to send the book back or trash it, but definitely be aware of this issue. I'm going to spring for the hardcover version with my next paycheck.

Amazing character art but pages fall out easily from cheap book design.
Amazing character art but pages fall out easily from cheap book design. I just got the book and the first day I'm carefully turning each page, two of the pages, one near the front and one near the back, have already completely detached from the book and now I have to figure out how I'm going to glue them back in and possibly have to remove the binder due to cheap glue that was used to assemble the book. That aside, the book is awesome in terms of nearly all of the Transformer action figures packaging character art (but NOT the packages themselves except for a few Japanese package pictures) from the US, Japan and even some UK designs. The character art looks fantastic, but because they're from artists for hire, they weren't given credit for their brilliant art work. There are hundreds of unique Transformers, most of them in robot form here, though some show their vehicle form drawings too.For the next edition, adding even tiny pictures of the packaging art would make a positive difference.

Gorgeous book presentation for fantastic Transformers art
This is a terrific gift for any fan of the Transformers from the 1980s. One of the greatest things about the Transformers brand was the original toy packaging during the 1980's. The toys were packed either in a box with a window so that one could see the toy, or put on a card and bubble with the toy visible. The package would also include a high quality artistic picture of the character in robot mode, and sometimes in an alternate mode as well. Then on the back of the package there was a highly detailed featuring a giant battle. The book is a hardcover format with high quality glossy pages that showcase the art very well. Collected here is most of the art for the various Transformers characters from 1984 through 1990, the era encompassing the original run of Transformers that has come to be known retroactively as "Generation One." The book also includes some art from the G2 era of the early 1990's. The art itself is timeless, featuring vibrant colors and exquisite detail that continues to capture the imagination even today. One nitpick: I had been hoping for some information about the various artists would created the amazing work in this book. The book does include a Hasbro advertisement for artists to work on these character renderings, but there is little to no info about the various artists themselves. In reviewing the pictures, it appears that many of the pictures were drawn by a handful of artists, with each artist doing multiple characters. It would have been great to hear from the artists, or at least know if they had done other work as well. Regardless, the art and presentation are outstanding. All in all, the book is an excellent addition to the collection of any 80's or 90's Transformers fan.

Very cool, worth the price.
Even those who have fond memories of staring at the effective packaging of early Transformers will be pleasantly surprised by the generally high resolution, vividly colored reproductions of TF art in this book. The shrunken, sometimes dull images on the 80's packaging just didn't do justice to the highly detailed, thoughtfully colored images created by a large team of highly talented artists. You do wish that each artist was properly credited, but that evidently wasn't possible given Hasbro's spotty archives and the inability to find every artist some of whom are deceased anyway. The end of the book does give general credit to the artists known to the book creators.I never knew that every image was intended to be a mechanically accurate representation of the form not shown in the bubble (which necessitated that each artist be exacting and not take liberties), but now I do.There isn't a whole lot of text in the book presumably because they wanted as much space as possible for the images but what text there is provides a general overview of the history of Transformer marketing and what changes were made from one era to another and from one market to another. There's a lot of Japanese/Euro images probably because those have been harder to come by than the American art. I appreciated the logo only pages, even those not into aesthetics would appreciate the terrific, creative marketing of these toys. Some may not be thrilled that some transformers are not seen at all, but they understandably have page/cost limitations beyond their control and they had some difficulty finding good quality sources for some pieces anyway. Hasbro even recycled some of the original paintings! Even into the 80's companies were not as aware of future licensing/profiting to be gained from then new ideas.I'm not 100% sure but I do believe that the majority of pieces from the '84-'86 golden era are represented, understably so given that that era produced the iconic characters from which most fan enthusiasm originates.Given the obstacles to obtaining source material and presentably reproducing said material, kudos to the book creators and the many contributors who's property and cooperation was needed to create such a good book. Anyone into Transformer collecting will recognize some of these contributors who are thankfully credited in the book.

A visual history of Transformers toy packaging art work.
Transformers Legacy is exactly what it claims to be - a visual history of Transformers art throughout the ages. The book is a large 'magazine' style format hardcover filled with a couple of hundred glossy pages displaying the box art for pretty much every Transformers toy ever released for the original G1 series in 1984, to Generation 2, the Japanese toy line, and even some oddities such as art from the 'Diaclone' series of toys which Hasbro purchased and used as the basis for most of their initial Transformers line. Also included is concept art for several toys, all of those fold out catalogs displaying this seasons new released engaged in a gigantic battle above the Earth, as well as art for puzzles, board games and other items from the Transformers franchise. In terms of criticism - if you can call it such - 'art' is pretty much all this title offers. Its a coffee table style picture book with almost no text whatsoever, so if you are purchasing it for any reason other than to refresh your nostalgic memories of the toys you had as a child, then you'll probably be disappointed. It probably could have been improved with the inclusion of the 'tech specs' that could be found on the back of every Transformers box for example.Other than that, the only criticism I can point at it is the fact that there are relatively few images of the Transformers alt modes.

It falls apart
Great content, unfortunately the book is really badly made, it starts falling apart just after turning the pages! Already sent away one but this one is just as bad. I bought it for my son, who is now really disappointed so I’m spending the morning re-attaching all the pages with tape.. Mad!!

Less than meets the eye. Ahem.
This is a beautifully bound, printed and presented book - a coffee table Transformers book if ever there was one.I am delighted with the book - even though it wasn't what I thought I was getting. As other reviews describe accurately, it is a visual feast the authors have worked hard to collate... But it is not, as I mistakenly thought, a look at the art of Transformers packaging. It is a look at the art. But not the packaging. If you see what I mean.As collectors it is all about the beauty, creativity and pristine condition of the whole Transformer from the mint condition character inside to the carefully taped edges of the box or card design via the incredible artwork and graphics. So whereas I thought this would be a celebration of the way Transformers was put together as a toy line, it is in fact a catalogue of the individual toy artwork. I suppose the clue is in the title...I would still recommend this book, especially for G1 enthusiasts, of which I am one. But if you are looking for more of a read, or even a gift for a Transformer fan who is into the whole franchise, then I would recommend The Vault by Hidalgo.A stunning book nonetheless.Roll out!

Pages fell out both times
Bought this book for my son’s birthday. the pages fell out the same day. Ordered a replacement and they fell out in a couple of days . As this has happened twice and looking at previous reviews , it seems very common. This is why I have given it 1 star. If it wasn’t for this I would give it 5 stars as my son loves the artwork .

Excellent guide and a throwback to childhood!
Remember the joy of waking up on Christmas morning and getting a new Transformer? Or looking up in the toy store at the amazing artwork on the front of each and every box? Well every day can be like Christmas morning now... this amazing book catalogues (nearly) all of the box art from the Generation 1 toys from 1984 through to the end of the series in mid-90s Japan. Everything is taken from either original art or negatives, with no box scans, so the quality of the images is absolutely superb. It's great fun (if you're a nerd like I am!) poring over the pictures and picking up differences between different versions of the art (who knew that Blitzwing was the only triple changer with official art for all 3 modes? not me!), and just getting lost in the pictures from years gone by when the packaging wasn't just a photo of the toy...I have two minor gripes: 1 - as commented by another reviewer, some of the double page spreads have bits of the artwork lost in the spine, which is a shame. 2 - it's a shame that some bits of art are missing (dino-cassettes, some of the euro G1.5 bits) but at the same time it's testament to Jim and Bill that they'd prefer to issue an incomplete tome than use lower quality images! All in all, if you're a fan of G1 Transformers, this is definitely a "must buy"!
