Touching Truth
My mother died at 92 of Dementia, so this book made me feel a bit emotional. This little boy had no idea that the elderly woman had a "problem". In his own innocent way, he stimulated her memories of the past and they fit appropriately with the situation. So often, discussing past memories are the only times someone with Dementia becomes alert and responsive. I think this is a good read for my preschool grandchildren, but could also be used for initiating discussions with older children about the needs of our aging population.

Not one word is waisted....like every living thing, each one matters, especially the last one!
Today I am a caregiver for a sweet, kind 84 year-old woman with dementia, very much like "Miss Nancy". But once, long-ago, I was a wiggly, curious and thoughtful child, very much like Wilfrid.I discovered this book back in 1990, long before I discovered my own "Miss Nancy", but I believe it helped to prepare me for what was to come. Wilfred's empathy and determination to help her in his own, loving way is very touching, compounded by the fact that he (a child) willingly parts with his treasures, knowing it will help her to recall her own.The beautiful softness of each illustration, and the thoughtfulness that is evident in their creation, carries the reader gently along every page turn. It depicts the elderly exactly as they are, enhancing the qualities that make them as endearing as the young boy who loves them. This is a book that should be read slowly and savored for each delicious word and every compassionate brush stroke. It is a treasure among picture books for young and old alike!

Greatest story about kindred spirits
I’ve been searching for this book. I read it years ago and try to read it to all my students over the years because it’s a heart felt kindred spirited story of helping elders “being back memories” from a young boys friendship.

とても落ち着く、ほのぼのとした色合いの絵です。そしてお話も同様ジーンと来てしまいます。持っていると、お茶を飲みながら眺めていたくなる本です。

I struggled with the rating on this one...
As a parent, I think this book deserves a 5 star! It is beautiful, heartfelt and the first time I heard it read to me I cried. However, as I bought the book for my daughter, I gave the rating from my daughter's perspective. And for whatever reason, she did not connect with this book at all. I don't know if it's the illustration or how the text is written... Or maybe it needs an older child to really appreciate this beautiful story - my daughter is 5. Not sure... Anyway, at the moment the book is just sitting there on the shelf, and I am hoping that one day she will want us to read it together again.

Just a wonderful book
This book was first published in 1984. I discovered it when my children were small in the early 1990's. The water colour illustrations expand the text and convey such warmth. This little book will bring a tear to your eye, but smiles to your childs face. I am so glad it is still in print and I have just brought a copy for my great niece. I have a mind to buy a little stock so I can make sure this marvel will remain in many memories, like it has in mine.
