Superb. Review: James Leasor - Leasor is without doubt a very accomplished author. I read his novel Follow the Drum some time ago and found it a fascinating account of British/Indian history. Who Killed Harry Oakes is an engrossing account of the lifestyle of extremely wealthy people in the Bahamas from 1940 to modern times. Although there are some editorial textual mistakes I recommend it to people like myself who enjoy what I call educational novels. I am now looking forward to more of James Leasors works.

The kindle version of this book is NOT Who Killed Sir Harry Oakes. The book provided via kindle download is War at the Top by James Leasor. It is NOT Who Killed Sir Harry Oakes. Do not buy the kindle version. I have purchased this kindle version twice after working with Amazon customer service and they are not able to send me the book Who Killed Sir Harry Oakes.

seems factual
The book had a few boring spots and jumped around but seems to cover the facts. I have a reason to want to know more about this

I grew up in this area no mention of the property that the Oakes owned in North Palm Beach. They had a big house right on US#1 which later became North Palm Country Club. I often wondered what became of the case.....who really killed Harry Oakes.

Great mystery
Very informative, but reads first like a straightforward true crime story then lurches into docudrama format, often with clunky dialog. Still tells an entertaining story, though I think his theory is a bit more complicated than it needs to be.

Blah blah
I had to set the book down, maybe I will finish it later. The book starts off with a bang, but begins to bog down as it delves into the social background of some of the people involved. I had to stop a few times and wonder if I had accidentally switched to a different book on my Kindle.

The photos
What happened to the illustrations? The captions are included and spaces for the photographs but the photos are missing.

This book is most enjoyable and reads like a novel. I've recently read "That Woman" which is about the life of Wallis Simpson and this book gives you more insight into the lives of the Windsors. The description of how Harry Oakes died is plausible but I think it's probably pure conjecture. The book paints a picture of life lived by the bored, self-indulgent Brits on the islands who had nothing much to occupy themselves apart from golf, dinner parties, etc. When Oakes is murdered his unfortunate son in law, Marigny, is arrested for the crime on the flimsiest of evidence, mainly because no one seems to like him. Eventually he is released but forced into exile so that he loses his business and his wife. There are numerous sub-plots and stores of corruption and drug dealing all woven together in a fascinating book.
