Q: Can each one be used independantly or does only one have the bluetooth receiver in it?

Q: Are these plug and play or do I need additional hardware

They are plug and play. It's a spring tab connector at the speaker. The Bluetooth driver has slotted set screws to wire the left and right speakers. The 120v cord plugs into the Bluetooth driver. It's fast and easy and comes with a template to trace out the speakers. The driver will only recognize one device at a time. In order to connect to a different device, you need to unpair from the first device in order to find it. Hope this helps.
