Beautiful Printings!
I've read these comics dozens of times since their original publication. I'm a huge fan, so I preordered this collection to have a "permanent record" of this groundbreaking series for my bookshelf. At first I thought the new printings would pale in comparison to the girtty paper of the originals (the black and white issues, anyway), but I couldn't have been more wrong. These new printings are beautiful; the reproduction is so clean and pure. The actual image area seems to be a little smaller than the original issues, but that could very well just be my imaginationAs far as the story, even after rereading these stories over and over, I still found myself cracking up. SOme of the more subtle humor held more resonance, like when Buddy tells Val "So what" about her father's heart condition. This is one of the greatest comic series of all time, and I've always felt that, even though it is so highly regarded, it never truly got the amount of recognition it deserved. Hopefully this new printing will change that. Now do a fancy ass version of Sweatshop!!!

Not just one of the best comics of the '90s, but of all time
Peter Bagge peaked with this series, his longest by far, about former slacker teen Buddy Bradley. Easily-and-simply described as a story about what happens when Bart Simpson grows up, Bagge's keen eye for people, their behaviors, their foibles, as well as for cultures both pop and broader served him well in what's not just a hilariously funny series but one which offers real insight into the human condition. The presentation here couldn't be better, three thick hardcover volumes printed on thick, matte paper, at the original printed size. Previously only available as a series of digest-sized trade paperbacks (which didn't do Bagge's detailed art justice, particularly in volume 1), this new edition is truly a revelation.Volume one, "The Grunge Years", presents the original black-and-white series about former New Jerseyite Buddy's aimless time living in Seattle, a period which coincidentally coincided with the then nascent pop cultural moment in the city. It's like a down-and-dirty version of "Singles" with less romance and more heroin.Volume 2, "The Jersey Years", has Buddy returning to his boyhood home and dealing with all of his old slacker buddies trying to pull him down into the morass of their pathetic lives. He also deals with the continuing ups-and-downs of his relationship with his crazy Seattle girlfriend (who came with him to Jersey) which takes twists and turns both insane and utterly believable. This volume is also reprinted here for the first time in the glorious full color it was originally presented in.Volume 3, "The Grown-Up Years" show Buddy and Lisa settling down in their version of domestic bliss as they deal with a child even as Buddy stumbles into becoming a successful dealer of scrap metal. Story-wise, this volume is the lightest, with half of it being taken up with never-reprinted essential ephemera from the series original run (and as someone who bought the comics as they were originally published, I can tell you there's an entire extra volume of said ephemera which they left out).If there's a single major shortcoming here, it's leaving the original "The Bradley's" stories from Bagge's '80s book "Neat Stuff", particularly the final one "Buddy the Weasel", which serves a nice prologue to the stories presented herein. If you love graphic narrative, '90s nostalgia, or simply a keen observation on the inherent hilarity of the human condition, do yourself a favor and pick this up. I've re-read these every few years since they were first published, and find new things to appreciate each time. There's a little Buddy in all of us, but it's perhaps better to read about and not live it.

Don’t Think, Just Buy!!
Hate is a classic...simultaneously laugh out loud hysterical and emotionally touching. Certainly of its time, but also timeless with its themes of friendship, life and love...it’s about growing up then growing older and all the crazy things we do/crazy people we meet in between. This is a work of a genius, Peter Bagge is a master! If this is a first time read for you I am extremely jealous....if you own this in every form possible already (like myself), well, buy this one anyway...it’s beautiful!!

Wonderful collection
I was born in 1986 so I wasn't aware of Hate when it first came out. Growing up I enjoyed the work of Robert Crumb, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, zines like Answer Me by Jim Goad etc etc. I always had a taste for the bizarre, transgressive, weird and anything with a dark sense of humor. I stumbled on Hate by accident and after only reading the first two issues I had to pick this up.If you appreciate underground comics or 90s grunge music/slacker culture this is a hysterical collection of wonderful comics pick this up asap as i'm sure it'll go out of print and the price will likely go up.
