Where Is God When It Hurts/What's So Amazing about Grace?

I have only recently discovered Philip Yancey and am so glad I did. I won't repeat what great things others have said but Yancey writes fluently about complex ideas and topics. He has opened my views on Christianity and the church and God's grace. I highly recommend this book - 2 of Yancey's titles in one.

Both books are excellent. Where is God When It Hurts was written in the 1980s but has been recently updated. As a physician often working with people who are suffering and in pain I found the work extremely helpful. The day after I finished the book I heard that a close friend has widespread recurrent breast cancer after 10 years of being clear. Hearing in the book about the isolation and "inability to be real" that other seriously ill patients has helped in my response to the friend - practical support, time and prayer; not know it all answers or platitudes.It was helpful to be reminded by Mr Yancey of the biological importance of a pain response and the serious medical problems (which I see regularly) of the failure of pain sensation.As for Grace, it is amazing! It is a word which has survived fairly intact through the centuries, unlike many of the other virtues. Yet many outside of the church don't really understand its meaning. It is the key defining word of the Christian message of good news; that love is given freely and without any expectation or ability of the recipient to pay it back.If you haven't read these book, don't hesitate, they will help to transform your thinking and your life.

I had intended only to purchase 'What's so amazing about Grace' so having 'Where is God when it hurts?' was a great bonus. I bought two, one for someone who is going through a lot of difficult circumstances at the moment and he's finding it very helpful too.

Its a book that will answer a lot of questions for some people and it will make you think.A very good book to read and read again.
