Greatest Golden Hits

Exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to add this CD to my collection and was happy to find it on Amazon. It contains many duets with other artists including Elton John, Sting, Celine Dion, Placido Domingo, Edith Piaf and others. Love it.

Perfect CD by my favorite international singer. This selection of songs creates a special mood, transporting me to fascinating places.

This music CD wasn't my first time with Charles . . . do tell . . . and so I have nothing but GOOD things to say about it. He's a sorta' sexy singer (in person too) and with that French accent . . . mmmmmmm. His voice has a certain honesty and his musical sound makes for great background music or for a slow dance in candle light or in whatever dim light you can muster.

The great Charles Aznavour was a protege of Edith Piaf. In this CD (all in English) his greatest hits have all the charm of his very French accent and style of singing. The phrasing and words of his songs are just remarkable - such timing! I have always loved him from in my youth (and he was not in vogue then) to now, for me always in vogue!!!!

This is an excellent 20 track selection of Aznavour's best known songs---featuring his most well-known song "Yesterday when I was young" my favorite of his; I love songs that move the listener with emotion. A couple of the tracks I wasn't too fond of, but overall a very good compilation with excellent sound quality.

Aznavour has such an intimate style of singing. When I listen, I picture him singing in a cabaret, even though I know he has sung for thousands of concert goers. He fits the words to the music in an incomparable manner.

The superb style and experience of Charles Aznavour with his classics

The 20 tracks chosen for this compilation are of songs which were written either in French or in English in the 1950s (2), 1960s (10), 1970s(6) and 1980s(2), with an emphasis on the sentimental or funny, which would work for both the French and American markets, but in this case was intended for the American one, with all the songs in English. "Blue like the blue of your eyes" dates, it seems, from 1952 and certainly has a Rodgers and Hammerstein feel to it. The recording here, however, is more recent and I have added it to my play list. In this compilation the poetry of the song lyrics is somehow astonishing. The translators excelled themselves finding, I suspect, more lyricism and poignancy in English than there ever was in French. "She", Aznavour's most famous song, is included but I must not wear my heart on my sleeve for daws to peck at. (Othello - look it up!) More reflective sentimentalism is available in the form of "La bohème" and "Yesterday when I was young". "What makes a man a man" powerfully appeals for understanding of ambiguity in sexual roles and very much reflects the spirit of the time (1974), while "Hold back the night" is a curious foray of the great man into the disco scene (1981). Everyone will have their own favourites. Purists for political correctness might not like the suggestion of sexist gender models in "You've let yourself go" (originally 1962) and cynics may criticise some tracks as banal and conventional; but every track is worth a single play-through at least.

My friend had asked her family for any cd by this artist, but they couldn't find it anywhere. I went straight to the source, and asked Amazon. The rest, as they say, is History! I got the cd and my friend got her Christmas wish. Thank you Amazon.
