An improvement on book 1, but still room for improvement
I have just finished my re-read of the second book in the Summer I Turned Pretty series, seven years on from my initial read. My re-read has been prompted by watching the Amazon series and I was pleasantly surprised to find that season 2 of the series and book 2 have more in common than season one and book 1. This isn’t too hard to be though, as there are huge differences with book 1. And there are still some pretty big differences with book 2. As I said in my review of book 1, Jenny Han was involved with the TV series and I feel she saw it as an opportunity to modify things she felt were lacking in the book.****SPOILER ALERT****It’s another relatively short novel, and the overarching dilemma faced by the characters feels a bit weak to me. Suzannah’s husband wants to sell the summer house after her death, the boys don’t want him to, he finally agrees not to after a brief pep talk from Belly’s mum, who seems to resolve all of his issues at the click of her fingers? It just doesn’t feel believable. I’m glad Han beefed up the story for the series. That being said, this book does have new layers of maturity compared to the first book. Many of the characters gain some much needed depth to their personas, including Belly’s mum, as they all grapple with their grief over Suzannah’s death. It is touching and nuanced in its execution. I wish there was more of this.Taylor continues to be my least favourite character. I honestly cannot understand Belly’s close friendship with her. She is annoying to read, and I hate the one-dimensionality of her character again it doesn’t feel believable. Again, spoiler alert, Han rectifies this in the series and the third book. All this being said, I did enjoy this read, and can recommend as an easy read with more feeling.
