This item quit working on two zones after 18 months. Is there a warranty?

Check your wiring, your output power at the connections in the controller when activated and your inground valve controls first.

Will a dead battery prevent the unit from turning on?

>>Will a dead battery prevent the unit from turning on?<< It should have no effect providing the mains power is plugged in and available. The battery only backs up the internal clock and programming in case of mains failure - but of course will not by itself run the sprinklers - they work on 24v anyway and the battery is only a few volts.

Excellent replacement

Builder had a Hunter X-Core installed, hard-wired in, but after 9 years something went haywire. The control knob selection and the display did not match and I couldn't control the drip irrigation. Bought this one to replace it to make it easier to fit in the location and for the familiarity of controls. I had to remove the plug cord from this and disconnect the hard-wiring (after turning off the power in the breaker panel) in order to install this. Sounds harder than it is. The wiring matches up perfectly so it was actually a pretty easy job. Power connected and the system tested good right away.
