Faster than coffee
Item was GREAT! Took me longer to place the item than it did to remove the bracket, that I spent nearly 5 hours hitting yesterday. My wife took longer making coffee! Barely any scratches on the control arm, you just have to hold it in place with your opposite had, tool doesn’t wiggle; just as a precaution.

High quality tool, but it's a little cumbersome to use
This tool did work, but as other reviewers have stated, it does not fit the brackets very well. The opening on the puller is too wide and therefore causes the tool to slip and gauge the brackets. I was still thankful that this tool was available because the removal of the brackets would have been basically impossible for a DIYer like myself since the brackets were seized to the motor. It would have been very expensive to take this to the dealer and I would have been without my boat for the week for them to do it. If the manufacturer would modify the width of the tool, it would work perfectly and would have received a 5 star review. The quality of the puller is very good. I was very surprised to find out that the manufacturer is not located in China, but is located in Johns Island, South Carolina which is only an hour and half away from my home.

Poor product
Not well made. Attempted to fit the bracket on my motor bracket and the gap seemed too wide. Once we had it set up and put a little torque on the threaded pusher, it stripped the internal threads and now wont tighten or loosen. Bracket is made of aluminum and obviously the threaded pusher is a harder material and tore up the threads internally. Buy something else!!!

Only good solution
I have over the last 20 years had to take apart my sea star steering cylinders to replace seals or other repairs every few years. It’s always a pain to get the bracket off so you can make the repair or replacement but this time I couldn’t get it no matter what I tried. I also damaged the threads on the ends of the rod that goes through the motor so now I have to repair that with a thread repair tool. I tried a standard gear puller and another puller tool from the local auto repair supply store and that was also not working and damaging to the thread. I ordered this tool yesterday, it arrived today and within 3 minutes of attempting to use it I had the arm off. If I had this tool before my project started I would have saved money and had the seal replaced and system bled and fully fixed by now. Anybody who ever works on sea star steering needs one of these. There’s no other good way to go about it unless your system has never seen salt water.

The best tool to remove stubborn brackets
Removed Sea Star brackets from a 2000 model year project boat that was used in salt water. Tried everything before I found this tool and it worked in about 15 minutes. It did scratch the brackets but nothing too serious and no worse than the corrosion. It took a few tries to get it right where it wouldn’t twist off the bracket. The key to success in my application was to grease the screw to prevent galling and letting the two forks ride over the end of the bracket and firmly rest on the shoulder; see pics for details. I also had to use a a propane torch and PB Blaster for one side. Search for a video on how to use the tool. Also like how the end cap on the screw can be removed to let the screw go into the bracket to get it all the way off: see pics. Definitely the right tool for job. Great finish and quality.

Worth the $$$
Don’t waste time with other similar tools! I saw this in some videos for steering ram seal replacement but tried to take the bracket off with other pullers and tools at home. After an hour or more and a trip to get a rental tool just decided to buy this. Got it today and I had the bracket off in less than a minute. Wish I had just bought it to begin with. Worth the money!

Having read a lot of poor amazon reviews for this item, I still took the plunge and purchased one as needed to get the support brackets off to service the Seastar steering unit. The bad points: 1. the end claw that fits around the far side of the support bracket to pull the bracket off is too wide so it grips the angled face instead of the flat face behind it - so the tool won't sit straight when tightening it. As it does not sit straight, the cap over the end of thread keeps pushing to one side. As you tighten it starts to bite in to angled part of the aluminium. If the claw part had less of a gap in it - this would not happen (maybe some Seastar support brackets are wider but if that is the case there should be different tools). To make it work properly, I took the tool for removing the end caps (looks like a flat spanner) and put it between the flat face of the support bracket and the claw - so that the claw sat squarely on the end cap tool and the end cap tool sat squarely on the face of the support bracket. - then it pulled off straight. The good points - 1. it is not too expensive. 2. It looks and feels like a quality stainless steel tool. 3. It worked once I put the end cap tool in to the mix. Ended up rating as 3 stars as it just does not seem to be well designed.
