Q: Can you write on it and it will stay up?

I returned it because it was not sturdy, and it was hard to stay stable for writing or using laptop on it.

Q: can the mouse pad be attached to left side? one answer says "yes" and one answer says "no"

I would say no. There is not a hole on the left side to attach it to.

Q: 1.How wide it ? 2. can I put it accros the chest while laying at bed (legs of device on te mattress) , 3. does it work for books while laying in bed?

I rest it on the bed when I'm in class, the only problem is if the mattress is uneven you'll have to put a thin book under one of the legs to level it up. As far as it working across your chest that depends on how big you are. The distance between the legs is twenty and three quarter inches. 20-3/4"

Q: Is it difficult to use while sitting in a recliner?

yes. it is too wide to fit the legs in the crevaces of a two or three section couch, which was the ehole reason I bought it. so i was never able to use it. it sits in my closet collecting dust.
