decent shape...
The BPRD Hell on Earth Volume 1 came in decent shape. The artwork and stories would get a 8.0 out of 10.

BPRD is so good
I loved the Plague of Frogs and this doesn't disappoint. The continuing story of the BPRD and it's members, past & present is one of the best written comic runs. Tyler Crooks on art is a great addition. The monsters look terrifying and the characyers look relatable

A fantastic collection as a very reasonable price.
I was a big fan of Hellboy and its assorted spin-offs when they came out, but somewhere along the way the series lost their way with plot and story issues. So I drifted away from the various series and even missed Hellboy's eventual death (although SPOILER - if you've read the most recent single issue of BPRD that might no longer be the case.)I was sent Hell on Earth Volume One to review and I thought that would be fun and a way to get back in touch with the series. The last MM-verse book I read was his love letter to Hammer Horror, "Mr. Higgins Comes Home" and enjoyed it, so I assumed I would enjoy this as well.I didn't. I loved it. In many ways the apocalypse is exactly what BPRD needed to make it interesting and relevant again. They're not only fighting foul beasties, but each other, various governments and humanities. In many ways, the inter-personal relationships between characters has never been better and it reminded me a lot of the old JLI series, but without the humour. The characters are so well definied, you almost forget it is the end of the world.A lot happens in this mammoth hardcover, which re-collects the first three TPBs and some extras. I enjoyed seeing Abe take center stage for a while, along with learning what happened to Liz, the craziness of what is going on in Russia and the return of the Wendigo, one of my favorite monsters. This was so good it convinced me to preorder the second hard cover and purchase the first of the three hardcover Abe Sapien collections and I don't regret a thing. I'm really glad I had the chance to pick this up as it has brought me full-fold back into the Hellboy universe and I wish I had never strayed.

A great start to a new series
4 stars - It was really goodThe plague of frogs has ended thanks to Liz but the earth will never be the same. The B.R.P.D. is struggling to battle the monsters, and some humans, while also dealing with internal conflicts with the teams. So much happened in this one volume. Kate is struggling to deal with the internal conflicts going on within the BRPD and deal with all the external monsters to fight now. She is wearing herself thin but she is still trying to do her job, which is why I like her. She struggles but she is determined to do the best she can. Johan is still acting weird but gets a new suit to live in. Liz is back but hiding from the world. She has to deal with a crazy trailer-park cult. The most startling thing in this volume was Abe getting shot. I wasn’t expecting it to happen in the first volume. This event will change everything for him, and prompt his spin on the series. I was extremely surprised by the shooting because it was very abrupt and impersonal. I was expecting to know why he was shot before it happened but you don’t get to know why in this volume. I am interested in seeing how Abe’s story plays out leading up to his leading to break from the bureau.Overall, this was a great start to a new series. I can’t wait to read the rest and find out what is going to happen with Abe, Liz, and Johan next.Trigger warnings: miscarriage

Excellent hard cover edition for comic book and manga collectors
This is a beautiful hard cover edition of the popular B. P. R. D. Series. This book is the deluxe edition that contains the B. P. R. D. Hell on Earth volumes 1 -3 (found in paperback: New World, Gods and Monsters, and Russia). It also has a good section in the back of the book that includes sketches. The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence (B. P. R. D.) faces a new threat to the world. Dangerous and deadly creatures roam the earth. We are introduced to new characters along the way.We learn more in-depth information about each character, and the characters develop nicely. The art is outstanding. The storyline is interesting with good dialogue, but the story really unfolds with what is left unsaid.Mike Mignola is known for the popular Hellboy series, and the writing in this collection is beyond entertaining. However, I would expect nothing less from Mignola. He’s an absolute pro when it comes to graphic novels. He never disappoints. It’s 408 pages of comic book / graphic novel pleasure.

Terrible quality
I bought this as a gift and now the return time has expired. Normally we wait and buy paperback but my son wanted this so badly that I paid for the hardback. When he opened the front cover, the whole spine literally broke open. It wasn't the bending and breaking in of a new book. So a full half of the interior spine is showing where it has broken away. Very disappointed.Overall we LOVE the stories of Hell Boy and the BPRD! Just disappointed by the quality because of course these books are read and re-read, stored and treasured.

Slow, but good
First- Not a standalone. This story ties into several past stories in the Hellboy/BPRD universe. That said- my husband only has a casual knowledge of that universe and he enjoyed this book very much. Reading B.P.R.D.:Plague of Frogs first will help. It's a big story, and this collection gets you started with the outline of it. The pacing isn't all out full speed ahead. It's slower, vignettes to start acquainting you with new characters and catch you up on the old ones.If you're a fan, it's worth it. It's a massive volume in hardcover format that collects from the beginning of the cycle to the Russia story, and also has an extra story from Dark Horse Presents and a wonderful sketchbook at the end.
