Q: When you pluck the foam out, is there still foam on the beneath it, or is it the side of the case?

The case I ordered (5/8/21) has 4 layers of 1/2 inch (approx.) cubes. You therefore can have depths of 1/2, 1, 1-1/2 or 2 inches. Note: the 2 inch depth requires removal of all cubes, leaving a hard, although thinly padded, surface on the bottom.

Q: Is the lid detachable or is it a more solid hinge?

Solid hinge, but it is very sturdy! I installed an 11" lcd screen into my lid and the case remains open and standing without falling backward.
