Q: Is this suitable for polycarbonate rc car bodies and does it need to be backed up with anything?

It is, however. I used it to brush paint, not airbrush, the outside of a foam airplane and used black light let's inside the foam for my project and worked great. If your going for the full on "this is my color" thing, then I would highly suggest a very reflective or white gloss backing for the best effect.
