Citizen X a Full Tilt Boogie Home Run
Wow, just when we are waiting to find out what our hero is up to in Region Two, here's a whole new heroine to fall in love with!Jenetta does not even show up in this book, other than by reference. Yet, against his incredibly rich and detailed AGU universe, Thomas DePrima has done it again!I am always trepidatious when approaching a new or spin off series from a beloved and respected author. While I'm busily trying to figure out when we get to see what Admiral Jenetta Carver and the characters we know and love will be up to, here' a whole new world, within the same universe, to get absorbed into! Double the pleasure, double the fun!In all seriousness, Citizen X does a fantastic job of continuing a lateral story line. The writing, as we have come to expect, is at the same high standard. The story line fun, interesting, engaging, and of course an edge of your seat - can't put it down - losing sleep like water through a sieve -- slam-bang ride across the galaxy.By reference (a stroke of genius) we do interact with our familiar friends from the Admiralty, we hear about what's happening from them, and so perhaps skeptically at first, perhaps even timidly, we embark on a new adventure with a new leading lady who is pretty average for the most part (well, she thinks she is), but still just as engaging, every bit as energetic and charismatic and realistic. It is actually Thomas's simplistic first person point of view that really carries the story line and makes it so well written and so believable.I think we have now come to expect and rely on a very high standard from Mr. DePrima, and Citizen X delivers in every way. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I can't wait for the next adventure! I will most certainly and unhesitatingly buy that book as soon as humanly possible! We have a few extra treats with this one too; a few mysteries still to be solved: Why did Sydnee get stuck on the Perry, and by whom? Who is Citizen X? Is he a good guy or a bad guy? Obviously, freeing an enslaved society by an oppressive government makes him a good guy, but his tactics could lead him down that same road of absolute power corrupting absolutely at some point, couldn't it?What will become of Syd? What about the ship? What's going to happen with the conditions along the border, heating up to a boiling point? And what is Space Command going to do about it?And as our wretched, wretched friend Donald Hubera says, are we dealing with another Jenetta Carver here? The wonderful answer to all these questions is we have to wait to find out!If Thomas DePrima can continue to turn out stories as well as he has been, I think he'll be right up there with some of the giants, like Heinlein, and Asimov, and Simack and Bradbury and other legends of the Science Fiction world. As for me and my Kindle, we cannot wait for Border Patrol Book 2!Thank you Mr. DePrima, you make long airplane flights and lonely nights in distant lands bearable!Dr. Geoff

A great new series from DePrima
I just finished reading Citizen X. Great read.I have read all of the Galaxy Unknown books at least 3 times. If I find a really good book, I have this habit of reading faster and faster, while highlighting passages, to see how the story comes out. Then I have to go back and read it again to get the whole flavor and substance of the story.Citizen X is an offshoot of the original Galaxy Unknown series. It takes place on the far border on Region 1, as far from all the action with Admiral Carver as can be in GA space. I think that DePrima let the Carver character grow and gain rank and position too quickly, given that she will live and be young and beautiful for 3000-5000 years. He has very nearly written himself out of a great series too quickly. For this new series in the Galaxy Unknown, he has slowed the plot progress down without decreasing the action. The characters are well developed and likable. And, although he brings this book to a satisfying conclusion, there are several questions left to be answered in future volumes. Why was the main character, Sydnee Marcola, an honor grad of the academy and weapons school sent to the "bucket of bolts" Perry in the backwaters of Region 1 in the first place? What will happen to the ancient Perry? Will there be a new Perry? Will Capt Lidden be given a 9790 ship or left in a desk job? Will we finally learn why Jerry Weems was sent to the Perry? And last, who is Citizen X?I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. DePrima, get to work!Added Oct 15, 2012. I just finished re-reading "Citizen X," and found it better the second time through. I love the fast pace and all the action. I also love that DePrima has left lots or questions to be answered in future novels in the series. As the Marines say, "Oo-rah!"

Shows promise
This book seems to be the start of a new series, Galaxy Unknown – Border Patrol, by Thomas DePrima. The original series, A Galaxy Unknown, is one of my favorites and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next installment in that series. This one is a spin-off that takes place in the same fictional universe as A Galaxy Unknown but in a different place and telling a different story. I’m not 100% sure when the events in this book are supposed to take place but since Admiral Hubera is still a member of the Admiralty Board it must be before Return to Dakistee in the original series. This first book in the series is very good. It’s definitely a promising start. It’s well written in the same way the original series is. The characters are interesting and there’s a decent balance between the time spent on the characters themselves and the actual action.I would say that the book is slightly inferior to the original series but then, it’s only the first book in a new series and there’s lots of promise in it. I have to say that I’m really dying to get to know why Sydnee was sent to this ‘backwater’ command in the first place.A good chunk of the book is down on a planet with marines slugging through the jungle. This might be the one thing that made me feel this book was a little inferior to the original series since I’m more a space battle guy. Having said that, DePrima manages to pull this off in a way that really keeps my interest. So, in short, a very good start and I’m looking forward to more books in this series.

Potentially good...
I had really enjoyed the Jeanette carver series some really good ideas thereI had hoped this would be good, it is a little slow to start and the plot isn't as tight but it does show promise , I think the author is trying to change his writing style when many loved his old flowing positive energetic slightly repetitive style which meant I could easily pick up where I left off as I don't get to read novels oftenI still recommend his books they are fun and have a feel good quality to themDo try them

A great book in a great series!
I started off on the first book by Thomas DePrima and have yet to be let down. I can understand though why the author wrote Citizen X with Admiral Carver being so high up creates the problem that some things she would simply no longer do herself, too busy being a military governor. With this book we are again allowed a look at some new characters who we can learn about just like we did with Science Officer Jennetta Carver.

A good, easy read
A good, easy, read with a well realised main character and a background storyline to keep you wondering. Similar style to the Jennetta Carver AGU books but still well worth reading. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
