Second one of these I've installed as part of my own, personal cat5 cable management projects.The device is reasonably well built. There are 2 banks of 6 jacks seated in the front (metal) retainer plate. The front face of this plate is where you plug in your rj-45-terminated cat5 cables. The back is where you use a punch-down tool to attach the drops of cat5 to the standard punch-down block. The nice thing about this punch-down block is that (unlike some) it shows both A&B wiring schemes. For every single port.If this is your first patch panel, the part where you terminate the cat5 cable with a punch-down tool may appear a bit "busy" at first glance. The best suggestion I can offer on this is to make a quick trip by youtube. That way you can see what tool you will need for termination, how it's done, and maybe get an idea of A vs. B (hint: it's purely preference for most applications, so long as it's consistent throughout).

I recently bought this item for patching 9 ethernet lines I ran in my home. I have no complaints about the product thus far, but a few notes. One reviewer noted that the item received was not the same as pictured in terms of how the wires are connected on the back, and that is consistent with my product. In my case this did not bother me, but if it matters to you be aware. Specifically the picture of the item shows all 8 wire mounts per cable being in a row next to each other. On the product I received, like the other reviewer noted, each cable has 4 wires attach on one side and 4 across on the other side. Though I'm a novice at this I can't see how it would have made a difference in organizing the cables for me. Also, make sure to note that if you plan to use the wall mount bracket and you run cables into the middle of the device to access the wire ports near the middle, *you must have the plastic bracket attached before you attach those wires, or run them through it, otherwise you can't attach it! Cables going in from the top or bottom or not a problem, but in the middle the plastic bracket forms a loop. In my case I was able to cut one side of the bracket apart to allow the cables I'd already wired to pass through the bracket. The bracket still attached securely to the wall, the wires seem to punch down very securely and the jacks on the front seem to be well made and function properly.

I originally had a bunch of Cat5 drops terminated straight into plugs, and plugged them into the back of my gigabit ethernet switch. This worked fine, but made the setup look a little ugly, and also made changing the network setup a little annoying. I bought this patch panel so I could terminate the existing five rooms, and have some room for future expansion (in the basement and some other rooms).The patch panel looks great, and has a large mounting bracket that allows all the cables to enter from behind neatly. The punch-down terminals are well-labeled for each jack, and if you have a typical krone-style punchdown tool (Amazon sells one for $5 or so), terminating all the connections is a quick affair.The panel's metal edges are a little sharp, so make sure you don't snag a corner on your clothing (or your skin!), but other than that, there's really nothing not to like here. The price is great, and it looks and works flawlessly.
