Oops, Pounce, Quick, Run!: An Alphabet Caper

Not your usual alphabet book.
Not your usual alphabet book. This one is a clever story, a mouse-dog conflict over a ball, told mainly in one word per page (occasionally two words). The words introducing the letters of the alphabet in ABC order aren't just a series of nouns. In addition, the young reader is treated to several verbs and adjectives, a couple of adverbs, one pronoun, one preposition, one interjection, an apt example of onomatopoeia, and abbreviations for kisses and hugs and sleeping. The lively, expressive, action-packed illustrations by the author, a longtime New Yorker cartoonist, entertain grandly and, at the end, leave this adult reader misty-eyed

Clever and Appealing!
I've read dozens of alphabets books, but this is the first time I've seen one that tells a simple story with just one to two words per page. It's appealing to young children as well as to adults. A friend of mine is buying a copy for her grandchildren--which she doesn't yet have.I continue to buy copies of this book, 10 to date, because it's such a wonderful gift for both the beginning alphabet-learner and the beginning reader. In fact, three copies have been to families with both. I've encouraged the older child to read it to the younger one, and it's happened!

A rich story told by the letters
I first encountered this book at my local library where I volunteer at the Read To Me program for little children and their parents. I loved the book so much I bought my own copy and have gifted it to many parents for their children.I am fascinated with the story that is related in the alphabetical, single words. It leaves so much to the imagination of the reader and the listener to get the entire story out of the single words.

Oops, Pounce, Quick, Buy!
When Mike's book, Outfoxed, was added to our grandchildren's library, it was a favorite of my grandkids, aged 3 and 7. Now Oops, Pounce, Quick, Run, has joined the ranks. While the narrative is intentionally brief, the illustrations are engaging and carry the story from beginning to end. A perfect alphabet book for the now 4 year old and a delightful read for the 8 year old. Thanks, Mike, from your fans!

Four year old (and grandma) approved!
I gave this book to my four-year old granddaughter this weekend. I read it to her twice then she started around the room and had several more people read it to her before she put it down. Great alphabet book!
