I normally don’t write reviews. I think this is my 2nd or 3rd in the 15 years or so I’ve been using Amazon, but I want to leave one here after seeing this is frequently returns and I almost canceled my order after reading the reviews. But I am so glad I didn’t!!! For me, this lil Owl, affectionately named Oscar, has been a little miracle worker!! So you understand my use case, we have a pool with a spillway from the spa to the pool. The house backs up to a small park with a creek. And we have neighbor duck we feed corn in the park, carefully monitoring that they don’t become a mess nuisance. Well our ducks were not a problem, but the freeloading black bird started using my pool spillway as a bath and a toilet after eating the leftover corn. They were leaving half a dozen or more poops on the spillway every single day. It was so gross and I was worried one of us was going to become patience zero in a bird flu pandemic. I found this owl hoping to scare the black birds way, and this could not have worked better. No kidding, there has not been a single poop on the spillway since I put him out. We are now day 6 poop-free. I did switch him to mute mode after 4 days and move him around the spa every day, as others have suggested. The birds will not land on the spillway so far. Their behavior has dramatically changed. They alert and call to other birds about the owl. It’s so great. I have now resumed feeding my duck, further into the park, not right at my fence line. And a smaller amount so less left for the black birds. I will say the motion detection can activate a lot depending where the owl is pointed. It also has a nearly 180 degree field of view. The water on the spillway does not set it off but wind in the trees does. Walkers on the path do not. Your experience will definitely vary with that part, but the mute mode has been working great for me. And honestly, if the new behaviors continue I might take Oscar in and only bring him out if he is needed again. That way the birds don’t get too use to him. If my experience changes significantly, I’ll update my review but seriously worth the $35. I was cleaning up bird poop everyday so my kiddos could still use the pool. So gross!! I’m on the fence with this product. I gave it a 5 star because it’s a good concept and one of the better choices for this kind of decoy. It’s good quality, for sure!! U just have to use it properly. U can just place it outside and leave it, u have to move it around, a lot. When a had a rat in my garden, I would bring it inside during the day and place it outside at night, in different spots. I would even skip a day or two. After about two weeks, I skipped placing it outside for a few days and I put shiny ribbons on it and took old scraps from around the house and tied it to the owl, that way it can look like it had features and would move in the wind or when it moves. Not sure if my added scraps worked, but the owl and my method worked. The rat left, I did have to repeat this process a month later, because the rat returned. But, it’s been about 2 months now and I haven’t seen anything. I think it’s effective, enough to scare them away from a period of time. But, it’s not a forever type of solution, great for garden. It’s worth the money, if u move it around as I described. I left it out during the day once and it was facing my bird feeder. I was wondering were the birds were then saw I left the owl out. As soon as I turn it off and brought it inside, the birds returned. Soooo, yeah… get one, if u plan to use it right.

I have a dog that barks at EVERYTHING!!!! I live in a forested area and there are zillions of squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and other little critters. Lots of oak trees around and in my front yard so we are inundated with squirrels all day long to eat the acorns. Thus my dog is barking all day long. I bought these in hopes of the squirrels being deterred. Which it does keep them at bay far enough to where she isn't as interested in them. However as some people have commented it doesn't always work. I do believe this is due to the fact the battery runs down. Mine is squawking all day long because even cars going by on the street will set it off. But that's ok with me because again it helps keep the squirrels away. When we have a few sunny days it works just as good as new. How long this will last is a waiting game. The motion detector will detect if the head is facing towards the area I want it to. However every time the head turns it doesn't return to the same spot "facing where I want it" With each turn is a little less in one direction therefore as the days go by it will actually face my porch; it eventually gets turned back around in the direction I want it within a few days. But I have two in the front yard so when one isn't squawking the other one is. I hope this makes sense.

The Ugold Solar Powered Owl is a neat addition to our garden! It’s both decorative and functional, and it actually works pretty well at keeping predatory birds away. The motion detection is surprisingly sensitive, and I love the flashing eyes—they’re just enough to startle hawks and owls without being too intense. The rotating head adds a realistic touch, making it look like it’s “watching,” which definitely helps deter unwelcome visitors. The solar-powered feature is convenient, but does not hold a charge for long. I need to charge my "Thurston Owl" at least every 3-4 days. To me that seems like too much as it is usually very sunny where I live and the solar battery should last longer. I did notice that on the few cloudy days, the motion detection isn’t as reliable, but I believe that is the solar battery not holding the charge. The silent mode is a nice option, as some devices like this can get annoying after a while, so I appreciated having that flexibility. Overall, it’s a unique and mostly effective product with a few a solar battery limitation. If you’re looking for a fun garden addition with pest control capabilities, this is worth trying out!

Another update: worked for one day and quit working. Love the concept and really wanted this to work, but no good. Returning. Updated review: Previously I left a one star review because I thought it quit working after a few days. You have to PEEL the clear film that covers the solar panel. Now it is working as it should after just a few hours of sunlight.

I've had this owl for 3 years. Ot keeps the deer out of my garden. The sound, motion of the spinning head and glowing lights work every time. It has been outside for 3 years! This month the sound stopped and only one eye glows but the head is still spinning!! Im amazed. I ordered another one yesterday and before it arrived the deer appeared in the garden and ate my okra, potato vines and were starting on my jasmine trellis! The owl arrived that night and I put it in the garden and it started working! Yeah!

Great product. I'm happy I bought this. My wife and I named him Owsley Stanley. We live in a luxury condo in Honolulu. Crazy ladies in the area feed flocks of pigeons, and two of them decided our balcony (called a lanai in Hawaii) was their home. It was a running battle for quite some weeks, with the pigeons trying to make a nest, us shooing them away, them crapping on our balcony. I tried spraying them with Clorox, and hit them a few squirts. They kept coming back. I put the owl out there and have not seen them since. I think they are scared to death of Owsley Stanley. As advertised. I like this product.

The deterrence impact of these kinds of decoys depend on many variables that have nothing to do with the product. The type of birds (some are MUCH more aggressive and territorial than others) and how long they've been entrenched are particularly important. A decoy is most effective when used proactively, i.e., to prevent birds from moving in and claiming the area as their own. It's least effective against an existing nuisance, like blue or stellar's jays, that has long since laid claim to your back yard and already evicted other competition. So I can't really rate the deterrent effectiveness of these decoys. The turning head and bright eyes are certainly better than a static "statue" decoy. And the motion detection , while not especially sensitive, does keep it moving enough. (To clarify, it won't detect a bird 10 feet away, but branches moving in the wind or the cat walking by will trigger it.) So bottom line, effectiveness will depend more on each user's circumstances. What I can rate is the solar function. It doesn't work. Using the included USB cable, I fully charged the unit before putting it into use in a location where its little solar panel gets about 10 hrs of full sun per day. It uses up the USB charge over a couple days, then goes dead. No amount of sun helps....I have to do a USB charge to get it working again. And I don't think it's just a bad unit. I ordered two similar decoys from the same manufacturer and they both behave this way. So, if a motion decoy works for your situation, and you're okay with bringing it in and recharging it every couple days, this solar owl might be a good choice for you. If you have fully entrenched nuisance birds that have taken over your property....good luck. They are a very difficult problem to get rid of!

It keeps the birds away. But the motion sensor is either faulty or way too sensitive. There is no option to reduce sensitivity. I had to turn the hooting off as it kept going off non stop in the night and I couldn’t sleep.

Me encantó el búho espantaPAJAROS, lo pongo en mayúscula porque no puedo creer reseñas donde escriben que no sirve porque no espanta ardillas jajaja, llevo un mes usándolo y se acabaron los pájaros que destruían mi huerto, lo amo!!! Se carga con el sol pero también tiene conexión, yo lo cargo una vez a la semana y el resto con el sol se mantiene la batería. La verdad pensé que se vería feo pero noo, esta lindo. Cuando detecta movimientos de PÁJAROS mueve la cabeza, hace un ruido muy realista y prenden los ojos. Tiene la opción para quitar el sonido. Se recomienda moverlo cada tercer día de lugar para que los pájaros no se den cuenta que es falso. 100% recomendable es lo máximo, busque por todas partes soluciones y ha sido lo único que me ha ayudado sin lastimar animalitos.
