Q: does this sling have a strap that goes around the mid-drift of the body to keep it secure to the body?

Yes. It does have the strap goes around the trunk. However if you need strong support to position your arm in the sling, this is not ideal because the straps are really thin and don't give much support. I liked the price but it wasn't really helpful for the support that I needed. Good luck.

Q: how long is this sling? length

I used this sling very successfully for a broken arm. but now I'm good so I threw it away! cannot say exact length but I would guess about 12", maybe 14" I am a woman about 5"10 and it worked for me. depending on your issue, the second strap that goes around the waist is helpful stabilizing the arm.

Q: the cheap sling I bought at the drugstore rides up to the elbow and becomes useless. Does this one stay put?

This proved to be a very effective sling for me. Following extensive wrist surgery my hand had to be elevated above my heart. Given the length of this sling there was minimal position issues and my arm stayed put. This sling was a good reminder that I was not to do anything with my fingers or hand as it extended past my fingertips. Furthermore extra padding around the neck allows the user to adjust the sling so that it is comfortable around the shoulders and neck.

Q: Will this material dry quickly if I wear it in the pool on my Mexico vacation?

Not really . . . . . the thickness of the material will definitely hold water for a while. One problem with this sling is that the shoulder strap cuts into your neck; it requires additional padding at the neck.
