A very good album I think their best one

great cd from Tom Petty's humble beginnings

There's not much I can add to the many other glowing reviews for this album, except to say that I'm VERY impressed. I've been a Tom Petty fan since the very first album, and even though this is not a proper Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album, or even a Petty solo effort, I'd rank this among the best things he's ever done. Really, this is that strong an impressive a batch of songs. The first Mudcrutch album was very good, but I think this one is even stronger. As another reviewer noted, there is indeed a Travelling Wilbury-esque vibe to many of these songs. Petty and his band sound looser, more confident, and more assured. It truly sounds like they are having lots of fun and that sense of joy permeates every one of these songs. Getting better with age? I'll drink to that!

Mudcrutch 2 is, in most ways, I think, an improvement over their previous album. The loose, Southern rock and folk sound pairs well with the songs each of the band members has written. A number of the songs sound like mid-period Bob Dylan in the melodies and phrasing, contributing further to my sense of this being more akin to the Traveling Wilburys than a Heartbreakers record. This is due to the fact that different band members take lead vocals on the songs they wrote, as well as an overarching sense that this album is meant to be fun. There are songs like "Welcome to Hell" that I would probably identify as filler on a Heartbreakers record but that feel appropriate and fun in the Mudcrutch context. The best songs, though (the one's I streamed nearly constantly on NPR's album preview in the week before this was released) are the ones where Petty is just plain being himself, like "I Forgive It All," a truly beautiful song. "Hungry No More" and "Dreams of Flying" are another pair that could easily have been reserved for the Heartbreakers. (The non-Petty-written "Beautiful World" is another standout for me, with that mix of optimism and defiance that characterized many classic Heartbreakers songs and albums.) The album comfortably mixes genres from country, folk, and rock, and the playing is excellent throughout. There's no doubt that the musicians were feeling good and having fun with this music, and the result is an enjoyable listen from start to finish.

If you love the Heartbreakers then your gonna love this album. Tom and the boys later perform but never recorded some of these gems , but you'll recognize them and rock to them as if you were listening to The Heartbreakers. If you just like Tom Petty, buy this Album , you won't regret it , it's that great and a must for anyone who thinks they have a serious music collection.

Being a huge Tom Petty fan and knowing them when they were Mudcrutch, I had to have this one to add to my collection. I had the first Mudcrutch album and I thought it was great so when this one came out, I had to have it. I will admit, I like the first one better but this one is a winner too. I have a vast collection of his music. I have also read 3 books about him. All were great and gave you a very good insight into him and his music and how Mudcrutch got started.

Wow. This one is even better. TP and the rest of Mudcrutch ( 2 members from the heartbreakers are part of this band) have made an album that is so good, I have listened to it several times in a row. I don't do that often. Even with other albums I really enjoy. This record is full of all kinds of emotions. Humor, forgiveness, youthful pride and many other subjects. Great songwriting all the way around. Of course, the playing and singing are both great. The production is pristine in an era of recordings often sounding dull. And yes, I think this is better than the first Mudcruth album. It was a good one too though so I recommend you pick them both up if you haven't already!

Cet album est certainement un des meilleurs du sieur Petty depuis fort longtemps. Tom et ses vieux compagnons Sont sur un nuage,la country rock défile au gré des morceaux et pour un peu je me sentirais rajeunir.... Les guitares sont toujours top avec eux!! 前作デビュー作よりもひっそりとリリースされた感のあるセカンド。 が、内容は前作以上にまとまりのある素晴らしいアルバムだ。 70'sアメリカンロックのおいしい所を軽やかに拾い上げ、まろやかにそして飄々とプレイするサマはさすが。 最近のThe Heartbreakersの諸作はあまり好きになれなかったので、本作におけるメロディアスでいてウェストコースト風の影と温かみが同居したような、どこか懐かしいサウンドがやたら沁みる。 聴いていて心地よい！ 的確に入ってくる手練達のもプレイもかっこいいし、Tom Petty以外各メンバーによるリードも作品に適度な変化をもたらしていて悪くない（特にRandall Marsh作はシンプルで個人的に◎）。 そうそう、こんなロックが聴きたかったんだよ・・・、しみじみしてしまうようなアルバムだ。

Die erste Mudcrutch vor acht Jahren war schon eine sehr positive Überraschung. Mit dem hier vorliegenden Nachfolgealbum setzen Tom Petty und seine Schulfreunde noch einen drauf und hauen nochmal richtig auf die Kacke. Das ist die Petty-Platte, auf die ich seit den Traveling Wilburys-Alben, spätestens jedoch seit "Into The Great Wide Open" gewartet habe. Was soll dieser nostalgische Spruch? Nun, ich schätze Tom Petty als sehr vitalen und unterhaltsamen Musiker. Wie nur wenige Kollegen versteht er es live, die Leute mitzureißen und ihnen ein Lächeln aufs Gesicht zu zaubern. Auf seinen Alben der letzten 25 Jahre ist davon nur selten etwas zu hören. Das soll nicht heißen, daß die schlecht sind, im Gegenteil. Aber ich vermißte auf ihnen oft eben diese Lebensfreude, die am ehesten noch vor ca. zehn Jahren aus "Highway Companion" sprach. Wieso kann ich hier eigentlich über ein Mudcrutch-Album reden, als wäre es eine Platte von Tom Petty? Natürlich ist das nicht ganz korrekt, zumal hier auch andere Sänger den Leadgesang erledigen und Tom Petty nicht mal Gitarre spielt. Aber ich habe auch Heartbreakers-Alben immer als Alben von Tom Petty wahrgenommen, und Mudcrutch sind nun, allem Abgrenzungswillen zum Trotz, zum überwiegenden Teil Mitglieder von Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers. Schnell sind die beiden genannt, die es nicht sind: Tom Leadon, der Gitarre spielt und singt, und Randall Marsh, der sich am Schlagzeug betätigt. Es ist wahr, daß Menschen, denen Tom Pettys Musik bisher gefiel, auch mit diesem Album ihre Freude haben werden. Ich sagte es ja schon. Man kann aber auch Unterschiede ausmachen. Der bedeutendste ist für mich der Stil des Schlagzeugers Marsh. Er spielt wesentlich weniger kraftvoll als die Männer, die Petty üblicherweise beschäftigt. Sein Spiel ist auf Dauer auch weniger interessant als das von z.B. Steve Ferrone. Der Gesamtklang der Band wird dadurch leichter - vielleicht ist aber auch gerade das der Grund, warum diese Kapelle so viel leichter abhebt als die Heartbreakers. Der andere Unterschied kommt daher, daß der Sound von Pettys Rickenbacker fehlt. Das merkt man nur, wenn man bisher viel Petty gehört hat. Aber der Klang der Band ist dadurch luftiger, durchsichtiger, nicht unbedingt tighter. Insgesamt klingt diese Band wie eine Mischung aus den Byrds und den Heartbreakers, also eine sehr ohrenfreundliche und radiotaugliche Mischung. Obwohl jedes der Bandmitglieder eigene Songs beigetragen hat, ist es irgendwie gelungen, das Album sehr homogen klingen zu lassen. Es strahlt durchgehend vor Lebensfreude und macht Lust auf mehr. Uptemponummern wechseln sich ab mit schmissigen Midtemposongs. Langsame Lieder sind praktisch gar nicht vertreten. Vor allem aber sind alle Lieder sehr melodisch und eingängig. Daß die Autoren der Songs ihre Lieder selbst singen, ist kein Nachteil. Alle können singen, niemand fällt irgendwie aus der Rolle. Ich war erfreut, mal Benmont Tenchs kraftvolle, bluesige Stimme zu hören. Eigentlich ist er ein viel besserer Sänger als Petty - aber Petty hat die interessantere Stimme und sicherlich auf Dauer die größere Menge großartiger Songs. Mike Campbell hat ein sehr kühles, scharfes und kraftvolles Organ, das ich schon auf der Heartbreakers-Platte "Echoes" bewunderte. Mir ein wenig zu kühl, aber passend, wenn nicht das ganze Album lang nur seine Mike singt. Die CD-Version läßt keine Wünsche offen, und der Papphülle liegt noch eine Art Kunstdruck bei, irgendwas Kitschiges mit Rosen und Menschen und Pferden. Nette Zugabe, aber wer braucht die? Insgesamt ein melodisches, kurzweiliges Album voller Ohrwürmer, das viel Hörfreude macht. Die Vinyl-Version, die ich mir aufgrund des überwältigenden Klanges der gleichzeitig mit diesem Album erschienenen "Fallen Angels" von Bob Dylan (natürlich auch der LP-Version) zugelegt habe, klingt etwas räumlicher und auch aufgeräumter, aber auch viel dünner als die CD. Die große Klangoffenbarung ist das nicht. Zudem gibt es offenbar ein Verpackungsproblem, das ich jetzt bei zwei von zwei Mudcrutch-Platten gesehen habe, die ich in den letzten Tagen in der Hand hielt: Zunächst ist die Innenhülle der Schallplatte an der äußeren Kante eingerissen. Außerdem reißt der offenbar nachträglich eingeschobene Kunstdruck, der auch hier beiliegt, die Innenhülle an der gegenüberliegenden Seite auf. Letzteres Problem ließe sich einfach beheben, indem man die Hülle andersherum in die Außenhülle schiebt.
