FINALLY, SOMETHING USEFUL
Just received my book. I started with the intro and did not stop until I was at page 30. I could not put the book down. So far, the book is everything a beginner or anyone else who needs to understand about music and music notation. It does get a bit more complicated as it goes, but it builds on what it already tells you. And it also tells you why you need music theory and how it works in a plain and simple manner. The only problem I find is that there are numerous names for the same thing, but he uses them all, so you learn them all. This is a book that really teaches and not one just for memorizing. I found it extremely helpful to have a piano or a paper keyboard to actually visualize what is being discussed. I just hope the rest of the book continues to be as interesting as the first 30 pages. Works even better when you LEARN in small doses. If you looking just to memorize, this book is not for you Thanks Nicolas Carter, I needed this.

Well Done!
I am a moderately developed beginner and I found this book perfect. It explained the concepts clearly and built concept upon concept, easy to read and understand! Don't be afraid if you can count and know a b c d e f g of the alphabet you can learn this!

Good, but not enough info
It isn't what I expected. It is informative, but not to the expert level it claims. I have been studying music theory for several years, and I was going to use this to teach someone else, but now I have to go and find another book that will teach on the level that I was looking for. The book it definitely good for someone who has no basis of music theory and doesn't really want to put any real effort into composing, but for anyone who wants to compose, it is not the best choice in the world because it won't give you enough information to compose.

Music Theory clearly explained
This book has many merits. It is intelligently written for the novice. The semitone wheel is terrific tool to build modes, chords, and progressions from any collection of pitches which create the scale. This large print book is a great companion reference book for the "The Understanding the Fundamentals of Music" class by Robert Greenberg of The Teaching Company. Concepts of music theory are built coherently and logically, making it easy to understand. Well done!

Very easy to understand language
Very easy to understand language. This book presents some fundamental concepts in music theory to the reader while keeping it simple so everyone can understand. I haven't finished reading it as yet but from the (about half) section I read, the book presents proper theory in a simple way. Having read a few books on the subject already, this one stands out as a simple but valuable approach to understanding music theory. The only thing it is missing is a chapter or two on reading manuscripts and sightreading. But overall I will recommend it to anyone trying to learn the subject

When I spoke to my guitar teacher he said that the book was very confusing & unnecessarily bringing in much too advanced theory too early
I got to the first exercise on intervals & got all the questions wrong bar one . When I spoke to my guitar teacher he said that the book was very confusing & unnecessarily bringing in much too advanced theory too early . I have since purchased the AB guide to music theory & found it much more understandable .

Not bad, if not a bit too basic at times
This book is well presented and easy to understand. This is great for any musician wanting to start to learn music theory. I did find the Chords of a key part useful but the rest was fairly basic. Definitely worth getting for basic to intermediate understanding.
