can you write with sharpie on them?

Yes I have written on them with sharpies. It will wear off over time but you can just write on them again.

Are there actually 102 1" blocks? Or is 102 the density or something??? Seems like a lot for the price.

There is 102 1" cube blocks, they are made of foam and come in 6 different colors (comes in a clear plastic bag, very light in weight).

are these all separate and perfect cubes?

Yes, they are individual 1" by 1" by 1" cubes.

Do these cubes compress like a sponge? Can I hold let's say 5 in a closed hand?

No they don’t compress. They are more like soft dice.
