You are in good hands with this book
I learned the basics of ASP.NET with the second edition of this book. Having skimmed through the latest third edition, it appears the information has been refined even further and includes more material including practical tutorials and advice for deploying your ASP.NET site as well as the inclusion of AJAX.To my knowledge, it was the first book to incorporate both VB and C#, which was its initial appeal. The author(s) very deliberately choose to avoid the some of the latest trendy topics that could stand to overwhelm or confuse you and instead focus on making sure you know what it is all built on and providing you with enough practical working knowledge of ASP.NET, VB and C# to make you "dangerous". I had no issues getting the code to compile and simply Googled my way through a couple typos in that second edition, which is actually a very healthy learning activity if you are truly engaged in the topic. It is an easy and engaging read. Nearly all of my questions that arose as I worked through the book were anticipated and addressed at the perfect time. The book is also packed full of practical aside tips and hints that one will encounter in most of the daily ASP.NET development tasks.Within a short time, I was able to tackle ASP.NET projects at my job. What I hadn't learned from the book, I was able to figure out by leveraging what it had covered. In a nutshell, it was the perfect starting point. From there, I read Imar Spaanjars' excellent Beginning ASP.NET book (always a good idea to learn from at least 2 good sources as a novice) and moved up to the comprehensive professional ASP.NET book(s) by Scott Hanselman & Devin Rader.

Near perfect ASP.NET tutorial
I started off trying to read Wrox 'Beginning ASP.NET' but found it pretty dry and not that comprehensive as a tutorial so I gave up after a few hundred pages and bought this instead.Although the Sitepoint books always seem to be aimed at beginners I normally find the information to be pitched at the perfect level even as an experienced developer. In fact I find the title of the book a bit self-defeating as it makes it sound a bit lightweight when it is really a great tutorial for anyone, including professional developers who are new to ASP.NET. I really appreciate that they keep the information as concise and entertaining as possible and do not fill out pages just for the sake of it and then put the word 'Pro' on the cover ;-)After struggling with other books, I have been flying through this one. Within the first 150 pages it has covered most of ASP.NET in a very good level of detail while providing all examples in both VB and C#. I was also amazed at the depth in which this book covers SQL Server - there is enough information in there to get you up and running with SQL Server even if you had never used a relational database before.Overall, this has to be the best tutorial on ASP.NET.Probably the best combination for learning ASP.NET is this as a tutorial along with Pro ASP.NET in C# (Apress) as a more detailed reference.

Excellent manual.
How often do you come across a book about pooting where the first chapter starts gets you going and every chapter to the end builds on what you've learned in the previous ones? The code the authors demonstrate works without error and you complete the book having achieved something very useful. The book does cover server-side ASP in more detail than the front-end but there's just enough front-end to make it visually interesting. Well done to the authors. I can't say how up to date this book is now since the time I bought it. I still have the code I wrote using this book. I can't say I've ever done that for any other book.
