Deviously Delicious
Don’t go around digging in the dark, you may not like what you uncover, and it may not quietly go back down…The book - The past is the past. And it couldn’t hurt me now.Me - Heh, want to bet? This was impossible to put down, the twists & the characters draw you in, just like Red Hands into the dark eerie woods where anything is possible if you’ll just believe. The final twist was both devastatingly heartbreaking as it was fantastic. I hope the author is working on book 3 as I want it, NOW!Oh & David Jackson, author of The Resident & The Rule has Alex North to thank for my next 2 reads, he loved & recommended them, and they sounded great so I bought the both!

Believe me... you won’t regret it
Another awesome story, incredibly well written, immersive and totally unputdownable. My new favorite author and I’m off right now to search for something else he’s written. Buy this book immediately... believe me, you won’t regret it ;-)

Could not keep me reading to end
For me, this is not a worthy followup to The Whisper Man which I enjoyed immensely. This novel drags and didn't give me enough chills and thrills to keep my interest . I had to go to the end to see if it was worth my time to keep reading. Some may find this book fascinating but for me, it was not enough to keep my interest.

A bit too weird…
I struggle to know what to think at the end of this book. It’s dark, depressing and not much fun to read…Im a huge fan of suspense, thriller & crime novels, so it’s not that the genre was wrong for me. Perhaps even in a dark story there should be a glimmer of light? There’s none at all in this story, and the whole premise of the book doesn’t make sense.

Same Book, Different Title
Like other reviews have mentioned, this is the exact same book as The Shadows. I questioned it, but was fooled anyway because they were released in different years. Kinda dirty to release the same book twice, and insanely disappointing to find out. Loved The Shadows, so extra bummed to feel tricked by Alex North here.

Surpassed my high expectations!
The Shadow Friend by Alex North is so far my favourite book of 2020! I loved his first book, The Whisper Man, so could not wait to start this one and it surpassed the high expectations I had!I was totally engrossed in the topic of lucid dreams and how they can be controlled, and it created a tense, creepy feel throughout the book. His writing seems effortless – the landscape descriptions are atmospheric, and the characterization is well plotted: our relationships with these characters grow as they do.I liked that both his novels featured Featherbank and Amanda Beck. Although the novels are independent of each other, having a common setting and character means I become more emotionally invested in the stories. I am loathe to compare authors, but he really reminds me of Stephen King using Maine for many of his settings and having characters dip in and out of stories. Furthermore, the exploration of relationships between childhood friends is always a winner for me.Mr. North is definitely an author on my “to be automatically read” list and I look forward to many more years of being entertained by this novelist.#theshadowfriend #alexnorth #netgalley #penguinuk

Same as “the shadows”
Just a heads up. This is the same as “the shadows” and has a different cover but it is the same book, which I already owned . It was too much to ship it back to I had to keep

Absolutely absorbing
Wow, this book is brilliant. From the very first chapter I was totally captured and couldn’t escape. The story seemed to take over my subconscious and I found myself dreaming about it long after I had put it down. I suppose that’s only to be expected. It’s a story about controlling your dreams and it’s extremely haunting. We start off knowing that something sinister has happened but we aren’t told exactly what, and as the story goes on, jumping from the past to the present, we still feel an sense of the unknown revolves around everyone and everything. I found my imagination running rings in my mind trying to figure out what was going on. Slowly the truth starts to show itself but, as expected, there are many big twists – one which I really didn’t envisage and was a huge shock. This is an extremely well written, psychological mystery that remains with you for a long time. Just like The Whisper Man, I think it will be a while before it fades from my memory. I sincerely hope that Alex North writes more of these fantastic stories as I will certainly be excited to read them.

Couldn't stop reading
I'm not a big fan of crime novels actually. But those 2 books (also 'The Whisper Man') of Alex North got me hooked. The stories seem to have supernatural elements, which is what makes them so exciting and scary even. The way the author plays with his readers, implys things but never really says and how he sets wrong tracks, is ingenious. I will say no more because I don't want to spoil anything. Find out by yourself. You'll see...

An interesting thriller
I really enjoyed this murder mystery with a slight supernatural twist. The story follows Paul as he journeys back to his home town after 25 years away (see the synopsis for more details). There's two different timelines - Paul in the past and Paul in the present. The past is genuinely creepy when Charlie enters the picture. The present storyline is quite sad when certain things are revealed (no spoilers here!). There's also a separate storyline of Amanda, a police Officer investigating a brutal murder which may or may not be linked to Charlie (even though he disappeared 25 years ago).I really got sucked into this story to the point where i had no idea what the outcome was going to be. What was happening? Why? And who? When it was revealed (right near the end) a lightbulb went off in my head and i was annoyed i never put the clues together. I was happy though because the quality of the writing and the tale it wove was brilliant.I felt this was much better than The Whisper Man and look forward to what comes next from Alex North.
