I need to be able to set a timer for say 1m 30s, i need it to count up or down and then start over with another 1m 30s, and keep repeating ?

You can set it to 60 seconds run or longer and 30 seconds walk. Honestly this is a great piece of kit. You can have it as just vibrate, or beep or both.

How do I turn off the backlight?

The backlight comes on for a few seconds every time a button is pressed. It cannot be turned "off".

Can it set up intervals and rest breaks e.g 45 secs exercise and 15 secs rest breaks

Yes, you could run an interval program like your example.

I want to use the gymboss for mixed intervals - for example: 4 minutes, 4 minutes, 2 minutes, 1 minute. Is this possible?

This timer can do 1 or 2 intervals in a program. To have more than 2 intervals you will need the miniMAX timer.
