Still working great after 2 years
I bought this so that I could use the DJ equipment I bought in western Japan (100V 60Hz) in the US (120v 60Hz): CDJs, mixer, and EFX processor. All total that's probably less than 500 watts, but it's expensive gear and so I wanted to err on the side caution and get the high power model. I switch it off when not in use, but 2 years later, everything is still working perfectly. I like that it is all metal and very sturdily constructed.I'm planning on moving back to Japan in a few months and will definitely bring this with me. I can put it in reverse and hopefully it will save me some money by allowing me to use the IH rice cooker I bought in the US (Zojirushi, $350) in Japan. That's a 1500+ watt appliance, but I expect this will handle it. The only thing I'm not sure about is if I am in a 50Hz zone (eastern Japan), I may need an additional 60 > 50Hz transformer (some devices will use either). If you move between the US and Japan and don't want to have to re-purchase expensive electronics, get yourself one of these! The only thing I should mention is that it weighs a TON so you'll want to pack it with your moving boxes not ship it separately.

The other unit is working fine. I don't move it
I purchased two of these transformer in 2014. The one that I use often the entrance for the 100v plug is so loose I have to rig it with card board or rubber bands for it to work. I sent it back twice!! same problem. If they added a few quality parts inside it may be worth buying. I would not buy this again! The other unit is working fine. I don't move it, unplug it, or insert new ac plugs.

Great Transformer.
I got this step up / step down transformer because I like importing video game consoles from Japan here in the US to play the games we miss out on. Sure this transformer being 2000W is overkill for video game consoles but at the price its well worth picking up the bigger unit. The unit is very well made and works very well. I recommend this unit to anyone that's thinking about importing a Japanese console to play here in the US.

Suspect Quality
I purchased this unit about 2 years ago when I returned from my stay in Japan. I had brought a Washer / Dryer combination back from Japan that requires 100V/50Hz. The unit worked fine other than twice blowing out the fuse, which I thought odd. The dryer part of my washer / dryer combination consumes 1470 watts which is well with the advertised capability of this transformer. This past weekend the unit blew another fuse, and when replaced would not work although the indicator light shows power. I opened the unit to find the following:1) the wire to the fuse was heavily corroded and looked to have gotten very hot2) when "lightly" pulling on the wires to the transformer, one easily pulled outUpon further inspection of these wires, it appeared to me that the quality of the soldier joints looked bad, and perhaps the quality of the soldier used might be poor quality. I was able to reconnect with good soldier and the unit now works. The unit is not used in a high stress environment, no moisture so I do not feel it should have failed. This may be a fluke, so read other reviews before purchasing, but also be cautious.

Three Stars
It had a funny smell but it works as expected.

Good unit
This step/down transformer is a bit bulky and heavy ( large transformer inside - duh). Good product though, it handles quite a load and never gets too hot. I keep it in a well ventilated area while using it with a 1700 counter top oven.

Like it. Works well so far.
#1 RULE: BUY A TRANSFORMER 3X THE RATED WATTAGE LISTED ON THE MOST WATT-HUNGRY DEVICE YOU ARE GOING TO USE THIS WITH. MostI bought this for a 500 watt kotatsu my sister got me while living in Japan. I chose to purchase the transformer well above my kotatsu heater to make sure it could handle the strain without breaking much of a sweat. Since I usually keep my kotatsu at about 1/3 of max, I think I went a little overkill on this, but I'd rather have this thing hardly work than be on the verge of blowing up.Negatives are it's pretty heavy, so find a convient, out-of-the-way place and leave it there if you can. It also emits a low hum which I'm sure would bother some people. I hardly notice it if I'm watching tv or or listening to music, but I notice it sometimes if I'm reading at the table or doing some other quiet activity. Conclusion: It's not perfect, but it has already paid for itself in heating cost savings this year. I don't know how it would work for something with more wattage like a hair-dryer or something, but for what I got it for, it's fine.

PowerBright VC-2000J
Product arrived in a double carton which was much appreciated due to its weight. This tranformer arrived in pristine condition and worked flawlessly. We use it routinely for converting 120v to 100v for all of our Japanese appliances. Our VC-2000J was tested under load and voltage deviation was less than 1% - this was definately one of the best transformers we have purchased and I would certainly recommend this to anyone who needs to power small portable appliances.
