Most useful recent Microsoft software development book on the market
I have now coded up most all of the exercises in this book. They were useful and well explained. In particular, I found the sections that covered MVVM particularly helpful. On the downside, I think the discussionin Chapter 7 on Remote Data Services neglects Azure. A developer may want to logically progress fromusing SQL Express to using Azure but this book doesn't cover it in any detail. The book does cover Windows Azure Mobile Services in a later chapter.I think the book doesn't give the Microsoft implementation of SOAP the respect it deserves. If you wanted to get somethingrunning quickly, reliably and maintainable for the long haul in a line-of-business application environment, it could often be thebest way to go.My biggest complaint is with the Amazon's Kindle Apps that I used to read the book. Honestly, I'm not going to steal thebook if you give me a decent cut and paste feature so that I don't have to retype the example code. Suchcheapeosity is beyond my vocabulary. On the plus side, Microsoft has done an excellent job with VS2013 byextending Intellisense even to data binding strings and adding other features such as Snippets that makes typing in sourcecode almost a pleasure.

Decent Content Ruined by Lack of Editing
This review is for the Kindle version of the book. The overall content of the book is pretty good, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars, but I think next time they need to hire an editor. I've never seen so many errors in a professionally published book. Misspellings, double words, mixed words...and I'm only a few pages into it reading it on my phone, meaning from what I've read so far just about every paragraph has had some type of error in it. This book reads more like a draft version that no one bothered to edit before going final. Maybe the print version is better, but I can't recommend the Kindle version.

As good as it gets
Straight to the point what you need. Detailed history and explanations....and code for you to follow with every lesson as you build up a real application. I have been watching and reading Jesse Liberty for a long time now. As good as it gets.

A winner from one of my favourite authors.
Yes, first of all I have to admit that I am a fan of Jesse's work. I have been a long time reader of his work so this review could possibly seem fanboi(ish). Now, having said that, there's a reason that I'm a fan of his work - he writes with a clear, engaging style that cuts out the cow-hooey and presents things in a concise and enjoyable way. In this book, Jesse and crew cover and explain the basics of WinRT development in a way that leaves you feeling confident that you will be able to continue developing them. More importantly though, this book leaves you wanting to write these applications - no mean feat given the hostility the platform engendered.Would I recommend this book? Yes. Would I buy the follow up when W9 comes out? Of course I will. Would I buy Jesse and crew a drink? Of course I would.

A great book for Windows 8.1 Development!
This book contains several very good tips/tricks as well as best practices on how to properly build engaging and wonderful Windows 8.1 applications. With details about how to produce useful tiles, properly using asynchronous development to provide a response UI while other threads are performing other slow tasks. Over all this book is a must have for any developer looking to build solid Windows 8.1 applications!

Good book
I haven't completed the bookNot the book issue, there is no need for Microsoft to re-invent the wheelYou can do all in the book with existing frameworks, I still don't understand why they need to come-up with new frameworks.
