A very good reference
I recently got my hands on an old iMac with Lion installed. I didn't like it and eventually found out that Lion was a crappy OS, that Mountain Lion corrected many of the rough parts of Lion, and that Mavericks took that even further. This book is a very good reference book for the Mac OS X computers. For years I have used a Linux distro for my main computer. I haven't used Windows in many, many years. Now this book Mavericks for Seniors has opened a door to another OS and I see that I am going to like it. I said "like it", not that I had any intention to stop using Linux. :-D It immediately gets into the Dock, and explains the functions of the Finder, Launchpad, and Dashboard. Then it gets into TextEdit. It is here that I take exception to the book. It assumes that the reader cannot type and gets into too many explanations on how word processors work. When I had a technician install Mavericks for me, I also had him install Firefox, Thunderbird, and LibreOffice. So, while the books gets into the basics of TextEdit and Safari and much else, I will probably stick to using Firefox and LibreOffice, which are default programs on Linux. But this is a very helpful book. It belongs on my bookshelf in case I have a Mac question.

THE Mac book for seniors.
This is the best book of its kind I've seen. I am involved in study groups for the "world of devices" we all find ourselves in these days, and the specific, well-illustrated, step-by-step approach in this book is essential for the target audience. Today, starting at about 60-up, is a whole generation that has only been introduced to computers in a spotty or even ad hoc basis, and many find it frustrating, chaotic, and incomprehensible. This book, with its multitude of color screen shots and specific pointers showing what needs to happen at each stage, is GREAT.Also, this book acknowledges that one of the biggest problems with seniors is that they don't understand the OS. A lot of books just jump into the programs / apps without a thorough grounding in how the OS works (files, folders, naming, where things go, etc.), and that is a huge mistake. If you are a senior or buying for a senior (what we did), BUY THIS BOOK.

Does not address Mavericks
I was very disappointed in the book. The title says Mac OS X Mavericks for Seniors, but Mavericks is not mentioned at all. It describes the basic features of the Macintosh operating systems that preceded Mavericks and does not address the many new features of Mavericks. I have been using mac computers since they were first introduced about thirty years ago, so I know very well how to use the OS X versions preceding Mavericks. This book is for seniors who are new to the iMAC. I have ordered "Mavericks, The Missing Manual", which goes into every aspect of the Mavericks operating system.

Not basic enough.
It fails to disclose the icons and the commands necessary to operate the computer. It has good graphics andshows how to take, edit and send photos. But it does not have the information essential to the operation ofany computer, e.g. should you charge the battery while the computer is "on"?

It covers items which are obvious. The index is lacking because it has very little merit compared to other similar books.

A Starter
For a complete newcomer it's perfect, a good style of learning especially for the elder user. For me, however, I was hoping for more details of Mavericks rather than the included apps.
