The Other Side of Truth

This book arrived very quickly and in perfect condition. History, adventure, and coming of age mingle in this moving story of a family who suddenly lose their mother and become political refugees. Beautifully written, this exciting story also poses hard questions about how much we should risk to stand for truth and against bullies. Valuable for kids, this novel is a troubling but also hopeful read for adults as well.

When twelve-year-old Sade's mother is killed, she and her little brother Femi are forced to flee from their home in Nigeria to Britain. They're not allowed to tell anyone - not even their best friends - as their whole journey is secret, dangerous - and illegal.

Great book a must read for all those who like to know about history

I had to read this book for my degree level Children's Literature course and I can honestly say it was one of the better of 14 novels. It is a well researched novel about political oppression and asylum and is also partly based on the writer's own experiences. The way it is written, from the viewpoint of Sade (shaa-day), a young Nigerian girl, is insightful and allows for a freshness of vision on the topics of asylum seeking. Cultural barriers are broken down as the reader begins to empathise with the children's experiences and start to question why does this happen? how can we make this better? A great read and one that has compelled me to read Naidoo's follow-up novel Web of Lies (about Sade's little brother Femi) and her first novel Journey to Jo'Burg. An excellent read! Ce roman est vraiment très intéressant. L'histoire nous donne le point de vue d'une enfant, cela change un peu des livres où se sont des ados ou des adultes qui sont les narrateurs. L'histoire est très touchante. Ce livre est vraiment très plaisant à lire et en plus le vocabulaire n'est pas trop difficile ^^

The plot is exciting and treats the topic of refugees in an empathetic way. Given the present hysteria about refugees, this might be a good choice for classroom reading.
