Broke after 3 hours use. Musically unconvinced. Cautious recommendation
Purchased to replace 5 year old Onkyo DP-X1 (a similar quality DAP of its time). Broke after 3 hours of use. As it was from amazon warehouse, someone before me was also unimpressed. Not as musical as my old dap. Could not install any other apps, or even update those already installed. Generally unimpressed by the IBasso for the price. See below for more detail. Bottom line is it is worth a listen, but be prepared to be disappointed both musically and functionally. ProsSeems well built. Excellent displayQuick responding interfaceConsReliability. Couldn't download any apps or update those installed with any of the store apps provided. This meant it could not stream any music.Musically disappointing. Could only listen to CD quality wav files on an sd card as I couldn't install any streaming apps. Rhythmically ponderous compared to my old dap. Great layering of mid range detail and separation but lacked low end micro detail and the top end could border on the slightly edgy, which was worse on the balanced output. This all made the listening experience a slightly uncomfortable ride and I didn't have confidence that it could be consistently musically satisfying or engaging. Connected my ifi ican portable amp and the edginess disappeared and the bottom end and rhythmic characteristics dramatically improved. This suggests that the amp module is letting this player down. The internal amp is usually a limitation with daps, but for the price it should have trounced my old dap, but it didn't. IBasso suggest a 100 hour burn in period, but I find this dubious for low current and mostly digital components. I have a lot of experience of music devices and I couldn't imagine the IBasso improving enough to warrant its price. User manual was insufficient and confusing. Possible line out issue. Manual suggests that fixed line out is only available when using the Mango app. Couldn't try line out with Tidal, but if fixed line out is not available then input into an external amp would be compromised using a variable line out as the signal would be degraded by the internal amp module. This may be an issue for some people, including me. Poor Customer support. I contacted IBasso support to clarify the operation of fixed line out, but they never answered. User interface of the Mango app could be better.

iBasso DX240 - Great Audio, but only after amp upgrade
I had high hopes for the audio quality of the iBasso DX240, based on all the reviews. Sadly, for me, the audio was the same as my very old Onkyo DP-X1 hi-res player. It was only after I upgrade the amp to the iBasso AMP8 MK2 Discrete Balanced Amplifier Card for DX240, was this player a game-changer. Now, those of you with the iBasso DX range of players may say I should have purchased the more expensive DX320 player. The issue with that is you don't get a micro-SD card slot to expand the storage (much needed with true hi-res music. To get the best of both worlds, I recommend the DX240 + amp upgrade. Great audio separation and semblance.By the way, I have paired my iBasso with FiiO F7S earbuds using the 4.4mm adapter. Thoroughly enjoying listening to my hi-res audio collection again.
