For a heatilator electric/gas fireplace, can you leave this plugged in without the batteries when not in use or should you remove it altogher?

Just a battery holder with a couple of spade terminals crimped onto it. Back when there was a Radio Shack in every town, making this up yourself would have been fast and cheap. However, those days are gone and this one gets it done for a bit more for delivery to your door.
