If I buy this what other equipment should I buy?

Depends on your level of homebrewing and if you have basic homebrew equipment. If so, I would personally recommend the Graincoat which helps insulate the GF kettle, maintain consistent temps and grts you up to temp/boil quicker. A hop spider is ideal if you are not using some other kind of hop sack/bag. It helps keep all of the fine pellet hops from circulation. The Grainfather sparge heater compliments the GF Connect. It keeps your sparge water at a consistent sparge temp. It will require another circuit in your home/brewing area if you are using the GF Connect at the same time. The new GF conical will be available this week which is an 8 gallon stainless steel fermenter with optional dual valve tap for sampling/yeast transfer, digital temperature controller and or basic cooling pump kit. Plenty of other brands available if you decide to venture outside of the GF lineup.

Not considering the initial cost of buying this, but is it actually cheaper to make beer using this than buying it- if so by roughly how much?

It will be much less brewing beer yourself than buying it, especially brewing all grain beer with a system like the Grainfather. A 5 gallon batch may be 25% to 40% of the price of a 5 gallon keg from a brewery. It's hard to say, as each recipe will be different and have different ingredients and prices. Extract brewing may save you 50% or so off the cost of commercial beer, and all grain may save you another 50%, depending on the amount of grain and hops used, and on your local market pricing for commercial beers.
