I am curious why your product says to use "cold" water, when other lye products say the chemical is "activated" by, and to use, "hot" water ?

The chemical reaction of lye added to room temperature water will create a temperature in the mixture at approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The boiling point of water is 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Adding lye to hot water could cause the water to turn to a gas state immediately, causing an explosion within the pipe.

Is this product safe for kitchen drains...lye-is this caustic to pipes??

Our kitchen sink drain pipes are PVC, and we've been using 1 tablespoon of lye down the drain weekly for over a year. The pipes are fine.

Can I use it on my bathtub drain?

It's actually a drain cleaner. great for hair, grease and food clogs. I bought it to clean old seasoning off my cast iron. My suggestion is that because it is a powder that you have water in your tub and pour it with gloved hands and slowly as to not create dust, but it does work well for drains, After your clog is taken care of simply flush your drains wells. It won't hurt your pipes or tub. I've had a Lye mix in a plastic tub sitting for 3 months and it's in perfect condition.
