UPDATED EDITION : The new edition includes these updates: The updated edition numbers the questions and answers . This helps to easily find the correct answers in the back of the book. 100% of the answers to the updated edition have been independently verified both by computer and by an international math whiz. AUTHOR : Chris McMullen earned his Ph.D. in physics from Oklahoma State University and currently teaches physics at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He developed the Improve Your Math Fluency series of workbooks to help students become more fluent in basic math skills. CONTENTS : This Algebra Essentials Practice Workbook with Answers provides ample practice for developing fluency in very fundamental algebra skills - in particular, how to solve standard equations for one or more unknowns. These algebra 1 practice exercises are relevant for students of all levels - from grade 7 thru college algebra. This workbook is conveniently divided up into seven chapters so that students can focus on one algebraic method at a time. Skills include solving linear equations with a single unknown (with a separate chapter dedicated toward fractional coefficients), factoring quadratic equations, using the quadratic formula, cross multiplying, and solving systems of linear equations. Not intended to serve as a comprehensive review of algebra, this workbook is instead geared toward the most essential algebra skills. An introduction describes how parents and teachers can help students make the most of this workbook. Students are encouraged to time and score each page. In this way, they can try to have fun improving on their records, which can help lend them confidence in their math skills. PRACTICE : With no pictures, this workbook is geared strictly toward learning the material and developing fluency through practice. EXAMPLES : Each section begins with a few pages of instructions for how to solve the equations followed by a few examples. These examples should serve as a useful guide until students are able to solve the problems independently. ANSWERS : Answers to 100% of the exercises are tabulated at the back of the book. This helps students develop confidence and ensures that students practice correct techniques, rather than practice making mistakes. All answers from the updated edition have been verified both by computer and independently by an international math whiz. PHOTOCOPIES : The copyright notice permits parents/teachers who purchase one copy or borrow one copy from a library to make photocopies for their own children/students only. This is very convenient if you have multiple children/students or if a child/student needs additional practice. NOTE : The answer key uses standard form. Fractions are expressed as reduced fractions, denominators are rationalized, and perfect squares are factored out of square roots. For example, if you receive an answer of 1 over root 8, the answer key will instead show root 2 over 4; both answers are the same, but the answer key uses standard form. Review: Highly recommend! Did recommend already! For pre-algebra strength. - My kid is in 7th grade. This book really helps to drill basic algebra principles bit by bit and is easy to follow along and has made math go smoothly. What is with the schools not giving out textbooks anyways?! Other parents have reached out to me and asked, how is your kid keeping ahead of the confusion of learning algebra with remote learning? And I said, "This book. Here's the link. Buy it." Good feedback so far from other parents. The person who wrote it really knows his stuff, loves his stuff, and loves imparting knowledge so that you too can know the stuff! I feel like you can tell when you look at how someone organizes knowledge whether they know what it's like to learn it all over again. Like when your kid starts getting lost, they can go back a few pages and look again at what they've done and get back on track. It builds on itself instead of skipping. We do half a page every other day, but if you are behind, maybe half a page a day is good and help your kids get onto the level and then space it out as a supplemental learning tool. I wish I had this when I was learning it back in the day... Review: Great book on Algebra - Great refresher book.

My son learns algebra.
My son wants to learn algebra, so the package is arrived and he has to take algebra, so he goes to class next year. My son's name is Dominic Hurtado, he's almost 15 years old. He is gonna be sophmore next year. My son is happy about this workbook and my son has his padfolio too so he can put his workbook inside his padfolio. My son loved it.

must know algebra a little already
Got for my kids. I had to print several worksheets outside of this book to further explain basic algebra concepts. Many of the equations in this book are answered in fractions. The kids who have not had much experience with algebra are typically uncomfortable with fractions as answers. I taught my kids pre-algebra last year and have had them do several basic algebra lessons this year. This book provided many examples, but i feel it moves too quickly. I find myself printing several supplemental worksheets to be sure they master the concept of each section fully. There is also not enough room to work the problem out. If there was some more room and maybe a few tiny lines to write on underneath each example, then it would be more clear and simplified so kids new to these concepts could really see what they're doing and work it step by step.

Not A Beginner Book
This might be a good book for a student who has been fairly good at math but is complaining that the teacher doesn't explain well. It would give a good student a different way of learning the material if the teacher's teaching style is not a good match for the student's learning style. Or it could be a good book to use with a tutor or a parent or a friend who is good at math but not used to teaching math.

Amazing!
This book is fantastic. Great explanations and SOOOOOOOO many practice problems with answers hidden, but still easily accessible for checking your work. This is the second book of Chrisโs that Iโve used to teach myself math and am looking forward to moving onto Algebra 2 with his books as well.

A good book
Has a good level of difficulty providing a child some significant level of challenge, which once achieved, helps him stimulate the confidence in mathematics. My child who is still in primary school, has now started showing signs of confidence in maths and is able to solve some simple simultaneous equations using the substitution/elimination approach which this book teaches really well. I am so happy I got him this book and I believe his secondary maths studies will be fun. Addendum: Dec 2025 So I came back to add a few more words to my 8 year old review because I believe it is human (ubuntu) to share good things. This book did indeed lay down a solid foundation for my boy's maths. During his n'fives and highers, he went on to achieve grades that even surprised me.

Good design of variables formulas questions for different scenarios
Good book for practicing algebra variables formulas. For each chapter, it has brief introduction and has lot of different scenarios of questions to resolve. Both of my 12 yrs old and 10 yrs old kids love it.
