Great travel guide to London
I have been using the National Geographic Traveler series for years and often found them very insightful, informative and of high production values. This latest edition of NG Traveler on London is no exception. This guide is of a good size for traveling, measuring 8 1/2" x 5 1/4" x 5/8" and over 270 pages. Although it isn't a pocket sized book, it is still modest enough to be stowed in a backpack and ready for use on the location. It is nice that the guide has extensive information on the rich history and culture of London, covering the current day London, the ancient and modern history as well as the arts & food (34 pages long in total). The guide covers London in 12 geographical localities (one per chapter), from the city to the outlying neighborhoods. Tourist attractions, hand-on experiences and walking tours are presented and described in an organized fashion, along with color-coded mini-maps, intricate illustrations and the typical NG quality photographs. Perhaps the guide is trying to cover too many attractions as each one gets only few pages of condensed contents. For instance, Tower of London gets 4 pages of description and highlights (including a nice 3D illustration of the building). There is an interesting chapter on excursions - day trips away from the urban city. Quite a few places are covered here, including Windsor, Oxford, Stonehenge, Bath, Stratford & Cotswolds, Brighton and more. Information on these excursions is very brief (1-2 pages). If you are interested in any of these excursions, you'll have to do your own research and find out more.Typical travel information such as hotels & restaurants, shopping and entertainment is available at the end of the guide. There is a bifold map of London in the front cover and another bifold of the London Underground transportation system in the back cover. These maps are pretty small to be useful though (e.g., subway stations are too small to read). No foldout map is included. As such, I would highly recommend getting a full size map prior to your trip or at the airport. All in all, this is an insightful and informative travel guide covering the history & culture, tourist attractions, not-to-be-missed places, and pretty much everything you want to know about London as a tourist. It is well organized and fairy easy to use. That said, many attractions could use a little more in the way of content though. Anyway, this is still a great guide to be had if you are planning a trip to London.

Another excellent Nat Geo Travellers guidebook; full of colorful pictures AND plenty of written details - great high level guide
I have been to London and plan on returning in the near future. This guidebook absolutely will be used as a planning tool and will go along for the ride. From maps to history, this guide is quite extensive.I honestly am a sucker for nice color pictures in a guidebook. This book is printed on high quality glossy paper, and has plenty of images to accompany the detailed written descriptions and information in the guide. Aside from just focusing on London, there is information on the surrounding areas, so this book is perfect if London is your primary destination and you might have time to spend a day or two nearby.I am using the guidebook to formulate my high-level plan, and then I go to Tripadvisor and Expedia to plan the final details. There is no substitute for reading actual reviews written by travelers, but it is nice to have a high level overview that this guide brings to the table. In summary, this guidebook is consistent with the quality of other National Geographic Traveler guidebooks; if I had to recommend one book for someone planning to visit London, this would be the one.

comprehensive book on traveling and visiting London.
A great book for traveling to London. Gives you all the highlights of places you obviously should attend, but also breaks down in detail the little nuances of the city, including lesser known places. It breaks it down by interest area and by neighborhood. This is really the most comprehensive book you'd need to travel to London.
