Before I Fall [Blu-ray]

Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch) is the epitome of a mean girl. She and her three friends rule the school. Their favorite past time? Tormenting Juliet Sykes (Elena Kampouris) by calling her psycho and other dehumanizing names. Today is a special day. It’s Cupid Day, and they’ll be getting tons of roses. Today is also the day that Samantha hands her V-card over to her boyfriend. But first she’s going to a party, hosted by her former childhood friend (Logan Miller), whom she never talks to anymore. Something happens at that party, an event so unpleasant that she and her friends leave the party early, resulting in a car wreck that kills them all. Or does it? There’s no way to know for sure. You see, it never happened, because today is yesterday. Samantha repeats the same day over and over. Same conversations. Same party. Same unpleasant event. Same car accident. In order for it to stop, Samantha will have to make some big changes, and some major sacrifices... “Maybe for you there’s a tomorrow. Maybe for you there’s one-thousand or three-thousand, or ten. So much time, you can bathe in it. So much time, you can waste it. But for some of us, there’s only today, and what you do today matters.” I read the Lauren Oliver book when it first came out, and I remember thinking how well written and moving it was. It had atmosphere, life-like descriptions, a three-dimensional heroine — all of the makings of a great Young Adult novel. My problem with it? It was repetitive, but that’s what happens when you write the YA version of GROUNDHOG DAY. And that’s what this movie is — GROUNDHOG DAY, high school edition. There’s a twist to it though, but I won’t go into it. This is a great adaptation, thought provoking and hauntingly beautiful. It centers on personal growth — and this growth stems from the choices we make. Loved it! The cast is great. It has Logan Miller, who plays the obnoxious Martin in LOVE, SIMON. He is adorable in this movie though. And I recognized Zoey Deutch from Netflix’s SET IT UP. She has one of the prettiest and most natural smiles I’ve seen in recent actresses, right up there with GAME OF THRONE’s Emilia Clarke. Her deep brown eyes reminded me of someone and, sure enough, she is Lea Thompson’s daughter. I see this actress getting lots of screen time in the next few years. As for the setting, I love the grayish, misty cinematography, and the scene where Samantha and Juliet run in the dark woods is my favorite! I recommend this movie a lot. Downsides? We’ll always compare this movie to GROUNDHOG DAY. Nothing we can do about that. GROUNDHOG DAY is a great film, and being compared to it is a big compliment. I give BEFORE I FALL five enthusiastic Crème de la Honey Crème cappuccinos (Mini’s Special!).

Fantastic groundhog day video of time loops; worth the watch. Ending was sad though..... couldn't see it coming 😲🤫

Excellent movie. Not only is this movie absolutely gorgeous to look at (British Columbia and Vancouver is breathtaking!!!)... the story is universal, human and heartbreakingly beautiful, yet hopeful. The cast is excellent and the writing is lovely.

Great movie! good to see kian lawley in it saw this movie years ago. it was sad at the end but good

This is the kind of movie that sucks you in right from the start, and never lets go. It's got a great premise that both entertains and makes you think, and while there are familiar elements (think "Mean Girls" meets "Groundhog Day"), it not a comedy -- but it does have a charming story with heart and imagination, and unlike many "coming of age" type movies, the story is every bit as engaging as the characters. It's darker than a typical teen movie, but each of characters comes to life in ways that leave you thinking. And while it's dark, there's also a feel good element about the whole thing. This is an easy movie to get lost in, watching the main character try to figure out what's going on, and evolving along the way. Totally enjoyable!

First of all, let me say I won't give spoilers, but it's not that hard to predict so don't expect much of a surprise, and it is not doing what it tries to do very well. I watched this because I like the concept. Shows and films that do this can be interesting and take it different directions, which this succeeds at doing. I could not find much in the reviews to help me know what I'd think, so I"m giving this for those who are having trouble deciding like I did. Overall, I have to say it has its few gems, but it has too many flaws. For the good parts... First, the acting is good at many points, particularly the main role. It is convincing enough. It portrays the immaturity and what it comes from in what they want to hide and ignore. Second, the development of the story works for the most part at showing the struggle of being mature under all of the influence and peer pressure. Though I would say it is missing a few things, in general, it works. For the negatives... First, if you are one who cares a lot, there are many small flaws throughout the film. For the most part, it is due to them using the same shots in multiple days where smaller parts of it don't fit. Second, the writing that is there is at least decent, but it is lacking too much. Some parts of this that could have been much shorter only showed the repetition in the first half of the film. The latter repeats of it should have had more to it. What is there works for the most part, but it should have had much more. Third, the last part of the film does not quite work. The last line in particular does not fit because of how it treats a particular character as the driving force when they are possibly the smallest part of the story. Fourth, and most important to me, the theme is ultimately a mess. One side of it works, another does not, and together they create a mess. One talks about the importance of your affect. The other speaks of ignoring your faults to put focus on your good features. This bothers me because if you have a focus on others, you should not need to focus on your strengths because your focus is not on you...thus a paradox. Is your focus on others or yourself? Both does not work. This is why I was disappointed. Some things were really good, and some things could have been so much better, but the weaknesses and flaws it had took away too much from the positives. It tried to be a more mature young adult flick, but it fell a little short.

SURPRISINGLY GOOD! I expected maybe a somewhat goofy teenage movie, but what was delivered was far more than that. I didn't realize how much I liked it until I realized how irritated I was when family kept interrupting me while I was trying to watch it! LOL! The characters were so well-developed and made you care about them. The message stayed with me so long that I had to come back and write a review in the hopes that other people would watch it...and maybe we could all begin to make the world a tiny bit of a better place.

I love this movie. It reminded me of the Butterfly Affect but not as dark. I really enjoyed the message.

I don't think anyone would suspect how it ends. It was not at all boring like groundhog day.
