I read this book and implemented a Hive project from start to production
I had joined Nextag a few months before this book got released and my solo-artist project was to convert all MySQL aggregations to Hadoop. I was thinking MR Java, HBase - and then I started reading this book. Start to end it took me less than a week and I decided that I want to give Hive a shot. It was possibly Hive 0.8 in late 2012 if my memory serves me right. I joined the Hive user group and also had the good fortune of communicating with two of the authors Capriolo and Wampler ad seeking clarifications. I don't want to go into the details of how well written this book is. Thye developers who read this review will get it when that reading this book and actively participating in the Hive community helped me a great deal to execute a project all the way from start to production - all by myself...If the authors want to publish a V2 , I would love to write a case study :-)

Excellent reference
If your employer uses a Hadoop cluster / ecosystem this book is a must.In simplest terms, Hive is an abstraction layer on top of Hadoop that presents the look and feel of SQL; it can also present the look and feel of NoSQL databases. This book discusses, in just the right amount of detail, how to put hive to good use and the important ways in which it differs from SQL and NoSQL technologies.

The best book on Apache Hive
This book helped me learn Hive. There aren't that many books on Apache Hive but this one is the best I have come across.

Well written, but will probably be out of date soon
Well written, good book. However how fast Hive/hadoop is moving, I think this book will be out of data (already is in parts) soon. I'm assuming they'll come out with updated v2 of the book in the future.

Better than most online sources
It's a great resource, and remains on my desk; however it already feels outdated (bought in October 2012.) There are many commands and functions that aren't in this book for whatever reason.Still, a great start - the floodgates should be open to Hive reference material!

Nice Introductory summary of Hive..
Nice introductory summary of a topic I really needed to have in my stock. Hope to get enough time to read them all.

Good reference in addition to the Hadoop book for taking the Cloudera Hadoop Developer Certification exam.
Similar to my review on the Hadoop book, if, you are planning on taking the Hadoop Developer certification, this book is a good reference to read before taking the exam.

Great reference to hive
Great book to learn how to analyze data on hadoop using SQL commands, but I think it need an actualization because the examples are too old.

I like the book. Go for it.
HIVE is one of the top Hadoop ecosystem components widely used in the market. If you have good knowledge on data warehouse and SQL then this book will be of immense help in learning HIVE. Defines the architecture and programming very nicely. Personally I like this book. Recommended for analysts, business analyst and of course developers. The delivery was worse. I received the book after 15 days of placing the order.

Fantastic
Well if you are looking for something that lets you know what is happening in HIVE and how HIVE is doing it, then this is the book to go for. Of course between the different versions of HIVE the what and how changes, but then this book will create the basic ground work to start, grow and be smart with HIVE.Starting with a two node HADOOP cluster and standard HIVE release from APACHE helped me quite a lot.

Very nice book
A good book if you want to know more about Hive. Theoretical and practical at the right point. I strongly suggest it.
