Just moved to a house with a belfast sink in the utility, and discovered after a few days the plughole was leaking underneath. It was very old and filthy and gunged up underneath, and totally beyond repair, so I hunted around and found this. It is brilliant. No need to use any plumber's mait or similar to get a good seal, just make sure the underside of the sink is really clean and clear of debris, old silicone etc. The only seal you have to worry about really is the black rubber seal up against the underside. If you want to routinely put the plug in and fill the sink then you will need to silicon around the edge of the top plate too, but if you don't particularly need to do that (and we don't), you needn't bother, it won't leak. Great design, much better than the traditional slotted/unslotted threaded pipe things. I also discovered that the old unit was not slotted, but there IS an overflow on the sink, so had that ever been called upon, it would not have drained. The overflow works fine with this design. Brilliant. Yes the plug is a bit plasticy and cheap, but it stops the water running out, what more do you need?

I had a leak on a standard butler kitchen sink waste. The threads on the existing 'standard' waste were gummed up with plumbers putty. Horrible stuff, designed to fill up gaps. The problem with the standard sink waste is sealing up the up the inevitable gaps hence the usual bodges with putty or silicone. There's not much choice to stuff silicone or putty all around to counter uneven surfaces and fill up the gaping holes. So, enter this product, literally 5 minutes to fit and job done. Don't bother with the old type waste fittings, they are more trouble that they are worth. The plug is a nasty plastic but I used the old plug which fitted fine.
