Best of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. When I first saw the first two films, I found the plot and huge cast of characters confusing. But then I figured out the key to understanding and appreciating this five-film franchise. J.K. Rowling once said she wrote the Harry Potter books for the, “serious re-reader”. She writes complex books with layers of symbolism, frequent foreshadowing (followed by distraction), and many characters grow and evolve in ways lost on one-time readers. I’ve read the Harry Potter books at least 25 times, and I STILL occasionally find an Easter egg that J.K. Rowling hid in plain sight. So after getting frustrated with the first two Fantastic Beasts films, it dawned on me, “What if Rowling wrote the FB screenplays the same as she wrote the HP books”? What if she wrote the screenplays for the serious re-watcher? So before the third FB film came out, I watched the first two films a half dozen times each. That prepared me for the third film. When the third film came out on dvd, I watched it a half dozen times in two weeks. Now I get it. Rowling writes screenplays the same way she writes books…with complexity, layers of symbolism, foreshadowing, and subtle character development. I now consider the third film, “Secrets of Dumbledore” among the most flawless films I’ve ever seen. Every scene is tight, the pacing never drags, and there is more complexity than the average casual viewer would notice. This is a film I will watch again and again. The joy of reading the HP books over and over is to discover the things J.K. Rowling planted that I missed during the first dozen reads. I now realize this is also true for the Fantastic Beasts films, and the key for appreciating their complexity.
