Do you have to have wifi to use it? Or will it just connect to your phone and mirror it?

Wifi is required. Your phone is used to set up the Chromecast on the same wifi network that you use for your phone when mirroring. Everything I have researched indicates this will not work if using the same phone as a hospot instead of a separate wifi connection. However, if they were both using amobile hotspot NOT on the device you are mirroring that should work.

how is this chromecast powered?

As shown in the product photo a USB cable and power brick are supplied. That is the recommended power supply, so a standard outlet is needed.

Dose it works with iPhone?

Yes, it also works with Chrome and chromium web browsers. It works on iPhone with most apps, all that I've seen an iPhone use.

does it have to be connected to the tv to connect to the android phone and if not, how do you connect it?

Yes. Connect to TV & power supply. Then have your phone on the same wifi network you will use for the Chromecast (you cannot use the phone as a hotspot to do this they must both be using the same wifi network signal.
