MerrellMen's Moab 2 Vent Hiking Shoe

My go-to shoes
I’ve been buying versions of these shoes for probably ten years, they’re still some of the most comfortable moderate outdoor shoes. I wouldn’t recommend them for any extremely wet weather or slick surfaces but generally a good practical shoe. Now if only they could make slightly more city-appropriate shoes that were this comfortable.

2 year review.
Have owned latest size 10 pair for just under 2 years now. They are still new looking and fit great (never wear in winter conditions and always use shoe horn to put on, plus clean w/water when needed). The only brand i can wear for long periods without hurting thanks to the insole and perfect width and size. Only complaint is that they are expensive but this has not kept me from buying. I know the quality. No surprises.

I do love Merrell!!!
I love the fact that Merrell uses Vibram for their soles. It’s the only sole that has been able to withstand my tendency to wear out the heels unevenly, and quickly. This will be my third pair of Merrell- 1st was Vapor Glove which I still have some 10+ years later (although they are ready to retire); 2nd was flip flops (they are still hanging in there after 10+ years). I expect this new pair to outlast the previous pairs (I do plan on getting new Merrell barefoot shoes this spring along with new Merrell flip flops). Thing is, those old Merrell shoes are torn apart everywhere (I’m hard on shoes, really hard on them)- except the darn soles are good to go!!!

Truly great for hiking!
A huge improvement over the hiking shoes I'd been using previously. Reasonable price for this model as well.

These are good but...
... Columbia shoes are better. I bought these for the summer and the waterproof higher ones for winter, I do a lot of metal detecting and walk in farms and on beaches for hours. Not a good idea to be barefoot with the tools involved for digging. These shoes have great arch support, I can wear them all day but learned in the military to never wear the same shoes more than one day. The laces seem to fail fairly fast, so you might want to get better ones. For "cool factor" it's nice to get Merrells, everyone has them, but I've bought Columbia shoes as well and I have to say they are way more comfortable in the long run, and stand up better to water. I have a black toenail as I write this from a beach trip, they tend to shrink when wet. These are rugged and stand up pretty well. However, I have a pair of Columbia shoes that I bought to visit Chichen Itza 12 years ago, and I can still wear them. I doubt these will last that long.

They're OK
This is my 3rd pair of Merrells. I originally had another pair of these (loved them), then I had a pair of the lighter weight ones (can't remember the model name), which were also great. These are OK. They are very comfortable, they seem well-constructed, and the sizing was accurate, but they have a couple of annoying faults. First is the laces. They constantly come untied. Neither of my previous Merrells had this issue. They must have found a new supplier. I have been tying shoelaces for 50 years, so it's not me. But these don't stay tied for more than a couple hours unless I double-knot them. And I'm not out hiking the AT. I'm walking around on sidewalks and in office buildings. Yes, I can inexpensively replace the laces, but I shouldn't have to.Their other annoying quality is that they squeak when I walk. Something inside the sole, it seems. It doesn't matter what surface I'm walking on, or whether it's wet or dry. They just..squeak. If you're outside or in a busy setting, you don't hear it, but if it's quiet? Squeak, squeak, squeak. Annoying. All in all, they're decent shoes but they are a bit of a letdown after the good luck I had with my previous Merrells. When their time is up, I will consider other brands instead of automatically looking to Merrell again.
