Magnificent book

I bought this for my Mum who is house bound now due to health reasons. She is loving the book, she said it has given her the chance to experience the art she can longer see as she can't go to museums. She has loved reading through the detailed descriptions and said it includes many artworks she has ever seen before.

I love this book - 100 paintings arranged chronologically and excellently reproduced in A4 size, with a brief but illuminating commentary for each one. Roughly 25% of the paintings are from the Renaissance with about the same number produced in the last 120 years or so. There are half-a-dozen paintings from the Baroque, of which the most powerful has to be Artemisia Gentileschi giving Holofernes what looks like the closest of shaves... Many of the paintings are extremely familiar, some less so [to me at least!]. I could bang on about the hours of pleasure this book has given me but as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words - and here you have 100 pictures. The best advice is, buy it while you can!

Quality book with nice glossy .pages. Loads of famous artworks with greatly informative write ups. Highly recommend. Good price too

I stumbled on this book in the library and knew immediately I had to own my own copy. It is a glorious book with a varied choice of chronologically arranged artworks. Of course, it is a subjective choice by the author but is a joy to hold, look at and read. There is a full description of each paining, a comment by a person of note and a biography of the artist. Additionally, the book contains useful and essential glossaries of artistic terms linked to the relevant work, and artistic movements. It is so pleasurable, accessible and readable; an ideal book for a beginner like myself or anyone who wants to better understand paintings.

Expected to be more specific. Anyway is really interesting, I have discovered several new art masterpieces with this book .
