I bought two of these on a Prime Day sale for €42 each which was an amazing price to get them for. This is a great pallet of watercolours, so pigmented and easy to use. This painting is just a really quick example of how they worked for me. I just paint as a hobby these days and these are as professional a pallet as I need them to be. Yes the case is plastic and yes it can be difficult to open but with patience it opens fine. I love these paints and happily recommend them to beginners and professionals alike.

Arrived when expected and seems very good. I already own a small field set of these Cotman watercolour paints so I knew what to expect but having recently joined an art group I thought I might need more colours and I think I'll certainly be spoilt for choice with this selection. Five of the most used colours are duplicates which is handy, however, once you remove those (which I put away for safe keeping) there is quite a bit of space and the paints are, as others have said, loose in the slots and move about a bit more than I'd like. As recommended by others, though, it was fairly easy to secure them with a tiny blob of Blutac and I think that should suffice to hold them in place.Some people have said that the box is difficult to open but if you slide a fingernail into the crack and give it a slight flick, it actually opens quite easily. Once open with the two trays extended, it did look a little large to take to a class, but then I found that the front mixing tray is removable which made it perfect. All in all I'm very happy with my purchase - and it was an extremely good price as well. Definitely recommended.

After seeing an artist at the Northamptonshire September 2025 'NROS' festival using these paints I took interest in them.They looked amazing on paper with good colour strength and held well on a brush also the fact the tin folded out from its compact carry size is ideal for taking them out with you.So thought I'll have a look online and they are being sold still for 50 - 60 pounds online and in uk art supply shops so was put off a little.Then i saw them at the crazy price of £24 in the Amazon sales thats over 60 percent off i couldn't not get them at that price.They come in a lovely compact tin with the logo on and have the slots the half pans are in that can fold open to accommodate replacement pans ( I assume any brand half watercolour standard pan will fit . ) Also a clever slot down the middle that will take a pencil and or a brush !I know from owning previous Winsor & Newton art materials they are a good brand .At the stage of my art ability the Cotman range is more than sufficient aimed at students & a intermediate skill group they're not a beginners set which gives confidence :)

its not obvious what way round to open it & more often than not all the paints fall out, the individual pans have the colour written on but if you open the lid wrong the paint blocks also falls out of the pans , this is a problem because a lot of the paints look the same colour when dry, its difficult to tell what colour they are making it time consuming to get them back into the correct pots, im not exaggerating here. each single paint comes wrapped in plastic , not complaining about that but it takes time to take off. the paints though are really nice, theyre vivid & good quality. i have lost about 6 pans due to the lid problem & all the colours are in the wrong pans because i cant work out which colour is which so i would recommend maybe writing in permanent marker on the container under the pans. its nice that there is an extra fold out pallette as well as the lid. would recommend the paints but just be careful when opening, i get confused & think the paints are upside down because i forget about the fold out extra lid , i wish they would mark it so that i wouldnt keep turning the container over causing all the paints to fall out, usually when i havent used it for some time. ive had it for 2 years now & the paints are still great. the cerulean blue hue is the only paint that kind of looks weak when wet but it dries to a lovely pale blue though i am no expert. it makes a big difference using these decent paints compared to the very cheap stuff. this paint is a good price as well for what you get

Good (I think!) but bloody difficult to get into. Neatly designed, but I spent half an hour working out which side actually opened. Once I’d got in there, it opened up to a really nice collection - a wide range of colours, mixing pans and a fine brush. It’s still very difficult to open - the plastic catches are not easy and there is a perpetual worry of either breaking something or throwing the contents across the room. However, those contents are good - I’m guessing that the broad range of colours is aimed at the starters (like me!) and improver market. Professionals are more accustomed to mixing a smaller range of colours to achieve the result they want.

The colours in this set are vibrant and blend beautifully. They’re easy to lift with a wet brush and layer really well without going muddy.The palette is compact but holds a great range of shades. Perfect for travel, painting outdoors, or just having everything in one place at home.I’ve used cheaper paints before, but these feel like a real upgrade. They’ve made painting way more enjoyable and satisfying.

This product is fantastic. After reading reviews I was sceptical about authenticity, especially for the reduced price when the set is worth at least £70, but its a genuine Winsor & Newton product that is definitely worth the money. As an art student, I was looking to upgrade my current W&N watercolours for something a little better. My first set was the W&N Sketchers Pocket Box and I would definitely encourage anyone new to watercolours or this brand to try the pocket box first. Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolour Sketch Pocket BoxSo, when this studio set arrived in the post, it was in a cardboard envelope typical of Amazon packaging. It wasn't bubble wrapped or anything, but it's not particularly fragile, so didn't need to be. The product is packaged in a blue Winsor and Newton box with the logos and information about the brand, just as expected. In the box you've got the paint set and a little leaflet telling you about the colours available in the range and their permanence etc. Inside the paint set, you've got two fold out palette spaces and 40 colours (5 of them have doubles, making it 45). The pans are small, but the paints are highly pigmented so a little really will go a long way and this set will last. The colours are individually wrapped and with the paper colour sleeve. Once unwrapped, you'll find the colours name written on the side of the pan as well. All colours in mine were as expected and all had paper sleeves and names on the pans.The individual pans are all removable, meaning that you can replace colours as required. There's even space for a paintbrush in the box, which is very handy. I love using these, and the colours that I'm familiar with from my previous set are as expected.I would recommend these to any watercolour enthusiast. For those new to watercolours, I'd suggest the smaller set first. This product isn't suitable for children, it's got small pieces that move around and will get lost. Otherwise, it's suitable for people of any skill level to use and I think anyone would enjoy this product. Worth the money!

Einsatzzweck Aquarell-Einstieg nach lebenslanger Fehde mit Pinseln - und von mir eine klare Empfehlung hierfür.Laut befreundeten erfahrenen Künstlern ist Winsor & Newton Cotman eine gute Einstiegsmarke.Bisher eingesetzt mit Createc Papier 300g (rundum geleimter Block).Zuerst entsetzt über die geringe Größe (Ich wusste nicht, was halbe Näpfchen sind), zeigt sich schnell: Mit der Farbe kommt man weit!✅ ✅ ✅ Stark pigmentiert✅ ✅ ✅ Farbe lässt sich sehr gut aus dem Napf lösen und im Deckel mischen✅ ✅ ✅ Das Set enthält transparente und opake (=deckende) Farben. Das Schwarz deckt bspw. so gut, dass man damit selbst tiefschwarze Pupillen kolorieren kann, ohne dass Papier durchscheint. Das schaffte bisher keiner meiner Fineliner & Marker.✅ Der kleine Pinsel ist okay und gut für Details. Die Nylonhärchen kann man mit warmem Wasser wieder in Form bringen.✅ Der Bleistift ist okay.✅ ✅ ✅ Der Radierer ist sehr klebrig, aber HOLY, der hat zum Teil mehr Bleistift vom Papier geholt, als ich wollte :DTolles Mischverhalten, die Pigmente verteilen sich gleichmäßig (nicht granulierend).Auf dem Createc-Papier ganz wunderbar verlaufen (trotz Tendenz des Papiers zur Pfützenbildung). Die Farben ließen sich gut layern und auch im leicht getrockneten Zustand wieder anlösen und verschieben.

Originally I started out with a cheap $5 set prior to upgrading to W&N. I had kept hearing that the cheap watercolors behaved differently compared to 'student' grade watercolors of other brands. So I went ahead and got the W&N Cotman set. They definitely are different. The cat paintings is a side by side of the two. The right is the cheap set and the left is W&N. The cheap set was chalky and didn't play super nice with water, while W&N was 'creamy' and melded with the water. I also noticed it didn't dry quite as rapidly as the cheap set, allowing for more time to play with the colors. The colors themselves are much more vibrant and bold. There are a variety of colors, all so very pretty. The white and the black(s) behave nicely, the lamp black is impressive for watercolor allowing for a rich darkness in paintings.I set aside the extra pans to allow for a sponge. Also the pan has a paint brush spot! The bottom pan is removable, which is handy for cleaning.I really only have two complaints:1. The pans do not snap into the tray, instead they 'float', so when the whole set is tilted or turned upside down the pans end up hitting the lid. All be it, they should be treated nice and not thrown around, but life accidents do happen. Solved this with a small dab of hot glue, so problem solved.2. Some of the paint loaves (not sure what they are called) were not staying in their pans. Solved with applying a small amount of water into the pans before replacing the loaves and let them dry before moving.Cons solved!All in all, would I say skip the cheapy $5 set and spend 10x that? Not necessarily. If you have the money sure, or even buy a small W&N set. The cheapy set I had purchased did not blend well, so scared me into thinking watercolors did not blend nicely off paper. W&N sets blend wonderfully! So if you don't want to spend a bunch of money, get the small W&N sets. You can always upgrade later to the bigger set and have extras of the main colors (isn't a bad thing at all).Another side note about replacement half pans for US individuals. W&N does not sell them in the US. They are not at the big craft stores either (looking at you hob lob and michaels). However there are UK stores that do ship them to the US. EBAY has a couple of US sellers as well. I haven't purchased from any of them yet. Also if you end up liking the watercolors a bunch, W&N does ship the professional series half pans to the US, so you can upgrade as you use them, they are more expensive compared to the Cotman series though.
