Shimano SM-SH56 Cleats - Silver

These multi release cleats are the perfect middle ground for me to use while riding offroad gravel or MTB. Came off a few times and never failed to release in time to part with the bike. Strong hold in the clipless pedals and also some extended range of movement / rotation which is nice to have and has helped my knees which play up if over constrained by regular clips on long rides.

These are the silver sm56 multi release cleats. I prefer them to the black sm51 single release. I purchased these to fit some new northwave winter riding boots that I bought in a black Friday sale, and I wanted to match the multi-release cleats that I use on my standard summer shoes. Shimano now ships cleats in a small cardboard box with a paper envelope including the pre-threadlocked bolts as part of a zero plastic packaging strategy which is good. They're lubricated straight from the manufacturer and this set doesn't come with a metal backing plate, which was fine with me as I was wanting just the cleats. There is a set available that comes with a new metal backing plate if that's what you need, at a slightly higher price but this isn't that set. Check your spd shoes and ensure your 2 bolt mounting plate is already provided with the shoe (should usually be) and not worn before getting these. If not, get the others with the backing plate as you'll need it and I believe backing plates aren't usually sold separately anyway.

After a few spills on my mountain bike while cleated in I stopped using cleats for a few years. Recently I purchased a road bike, so decided to try using them again. Before buying these multi cleats I tried half clips. I quickly found that even with half clips they held my foot in an uncomfortable position, causing knee pain. I tried these cleats, with the pedal tensioner backed out all the way (cheapest shimano pedals), and they have been great. Sufficient "float" to prevent my knee pain. Enough "tension" to hold my foot on the pedal, yet really easy to release. Getting back into the habit you inevitably forget to uncleat from time to time, but these did not let me down - release was easy.A quick spray of WD40 on the pedals once a month keep these cleats working perfectly.I would definately recommend for the born again cleaters.
