UPDATE BELOW! Cool science observation. Mold is inevitable
Purchased for my 11-year-old son. We have had this for three months now. Once our ants arrived, they began making their tunnels immediately. It was really fun to see their progress day by day and we added the tube so that they can go up and around for fun. The tube it came with was very badly bent so we bought a new tube to replace it. We have debated getting a second ant farm so that the ants can start a new home. But the one downfall with this kit is the ants take their food down below, and there’s no way to get it out if they don’t eat it all up. So it starts to mold and you can see the mold through the plastic if it’s close enough to the edge. That’s unfortunate, but the ants don’t seem to mind, and I think over the last three months, we’ve only lost maybe four ants. I mean they died. Another thing to consider is, if you have a science child, they’re going to ask if eggs are gonna be made or where’s the queen? Because my son did, and he is very concerned about their well-being since they don’t have a queen to tend to. That’s something we didn’t think about when we ordered this kit. So now it’s just sort of a waiting game to see how much longer they will live. And, of course, we are not going to set them free out in the yard to fend for themselves. So please consider your child or yourself when making this purchase for long-term. Other than that, it’s been great so far. It’s small and doesn’t take up a lot of space on the countertop.UPDATE! It’s been 8 months and we still have live ants. Maybe 7-10 left. They seem active. And are more active if you place them next to as well liters. When I notice they are all down below, I take the lid off for fresh air. They like a drop of honey, apples and crackers best.

Sand everywhere**may2023 update**
Super excited to get this! Arrived on time. Opened it to find both bags of sand had opened in the larger bag all the pieces come in. And there are holes in the larger bag. We lost about half the sand :(I got a surprise, an email saying they'd like to send a replacement farm with all new packaging. Let me tell ya!!! No sand loss. Everything was wrapped really nicely. The sand was in thicker bags, inside another bag and both bags of sand were in one larger bag. The tube was even better than the last one. I've seen lots of reviews about the life span of the ants. I did lose all but 8 ants. These 8 ants have been going hard making new tunnels in the new sand and ant farm. :) thank you for listening to customers! You did a great job with packing this. Also gave more stars! They did a great job!

Interesting
They are fun for kids and they start building with in 6 hours. It's just wanted to see a video on how to feed them and how to make them survive specially that we don't have a queen or eggs

My Son Loves this!!
Honestly my son is a big nerd and all he asked for his 10th birthday was an ant farm. After looking on here we decided to go with this specific ant farm! I’m not going to lie I was super excited too because this was always something I wanted as a kid. It was delivered in a timely manner and the ants were like 3 days later. We set it up as instructed the only thing I didn’t do is cool down the ants. Within the first hour they had a few tunnels built. There were some dead ants but they buried them in the sand. We also feed them oatmeal every other day and they burry that too! We water them a few drops everyday or the sand dries out and the tunnels collapse.I would recommend this 10 out 10!!

WAY smaller than expected
Read the dimensions of this! It’s VERY small! Other than that, it’s OK. I would send it back and get a different one, but it was a bday present for my son and his ants arrived the next day (we didn’t order the ants recommended in this set). For $24 - this is way too small.

Fun ant farm
A bought this and farm for my two-year-old daughter originally I bought another ant farm when she was younger but she didn’t really understand what was going on now that she’s a little bit older it’s more fun for her because she understands what the ants are doing. Now she helped participate watering the sand down and when the ants started digging the tunnels, she was so excited only downside was the tubing that was provided to have them to the little half circle got bent in transit and was unable to get it not to be kinked. So I was unable to do the little loop for the ants because it would pinch in the middle and they couldn’t go all the way around. But other than that really cool item.

False advertising
This item is false advertising. It says it comes with a free coupon for live ants. But then it says on the coupon that it's for a discounted prices. Then it also says it comes with food, but then when I bought the received the package, it did t have any in the box. And when i was on the website with my free coupon it says don't forget the food and other accessories. It's like reading the fine print on contracts. All that is actually purchases in this item is the tank and sand. Everything else you have to buy separately.
