BKT3 - Basics of Keyboard Theory - Level 3

Correcting the viewpoint put forward by a previous reviewer
Contrary to what a previous reviewer had to say, this book does have new material. Since at each level of the Certificate of Merit, students are expected to know material from previous levels, this book reviews old material in addition to introducing new concepts. For the circle of fifths, for instance, Level 3 goes all the way up to C sharp Major. And for the flat keys, all the way to G Flat Major. Could the levels progress at a faster pace? Probably. On the other hand, they are written keeping in mind the requirements of the Certificate of Merit exam, and the theory requirements of the CM aren't quite as tough as those of, for instance, the ABRSM. For those who'd prefer to study according to a tougher syllabus, Ying Ying Ng's Theory for Young Musicians or Josephine Koh's books might be preferable. These are both written for the ABRSM theory exams.

For Certificate of Merit Exams
This series is for students studying for the California Certificate of Merit Exams, but can be used by any piano student to learn Keyboard theory basics. The books are comprehensive and provide a systematic way for children and teenagers to learn Keyboard theory. Adult students however, may find these workbooks move a little too slow. My students who complete level 10 are prepared for the Johnson AP Theory Book and exam.

Lack of explanation
As the level progress, it might be better to have some sort of teacher explanation along with it as some questions are getting harder

Just the essentials
Felt more of an explanation of the theory would go a long way. If you want the barest of essentials then the series would be OK.

Great theory workbooks
Julie McIntosh Johnson's theory books are wonderful. Her books are full of explanations and offer plenty of opportunities to "test" the knowledge learned. They are essentially work books (use pencil!). My daughters (under 10) use them, and I use them, too. They are easy to understand, and repetitive---in a good way; they reinforce the concepts repeatedly. I would highly recommend these to anyone of any age learning (or re-learning) theory.

Complete study
Unlike some other exercise books, this serious (from prep to advanced level) always starts with the basic. Therefore even if you haven't done the earlier levels, you will be able to learn from the very basic concepts and theory. If you have done the earlier levels, it's a good recap/revision of what you have learnt. Thank you Ms. Johnson for your thoughtfulness!
